PETERSBURG, IL - Hallie Lewis Wingfield, Sr., 84, of Petersburg, Ill., passed away Aug. 16, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.
Hallie was born April 12, 1931, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, to Lewis and Blanche Wingfield, the youngest of 13 children.
Hallie was a high school basketball star in Dallas City, Ill., and was selected for the All-State Basketball Team in 1949. After high school, he explored the United States, which led to his legacy as a great storyteller. He was an ironworker for most of his career, having worked on the construction of the Sears Tower in Chicago. He had a successful second career selling insurance, and ended his working life as a self-employed carpenter.
Along with his storytelling, Hallie was known for his billiards prowess, being a great father, and most of all, being smart enough to marry his wife of 58 years, Helene, who survives him.
Hallie also leaves behind seven children: Hallie Jr. (Shannon) of Temple, Ga., Dianne (Dave) Britton of Petersburg, Jonathan (Paula) of Kingston Springs, Tenn., Lisa (Tim) Schafer of Petersburg, Patrick of The Colony, Texas, Jennifer (Paul) McCluskey of Bellevue, Tenn., and Marla (Bill) Powell of Cambridge, Ill.; 13 grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler and Stephanie Wingfield, Courtney (Tyler) Ellis, Matt and Rachel Needham, Justin and Jonathan (Kasey) Britton, Matt (Nina) and Ian Flowers, Ashli Richardson, Tommy Schafer, and Cory Miller; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, eight brothers and four sisters.
Hallie requested his body be donated for medical research.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Petersburg, Ill., from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life dinner will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to: Memorial Home Services Hospice, ATTN: Donations & Giving, 720 N. Bond St., Springfield, IL 62702.
