SPRINGFIELD - Harry G. Newman, Jr., 87, died at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Regency Nursing Home.
Harry was born May 28, 1928, in Hammond, Ind., the son of Harry George, Sr., and Dorothy Greene Newman. He married Betsy Johnson on September 21, 1952, at Christ Episcopal Church, Springfield.
Harry was a graduate of Springfield High School, Class of 1946. He enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, Platoon 402, Paris Island, from 1946 until he was honorably discharged in 1948.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Government from Bradley University in 1952. Later, he earned his master's degree in Psychology (1973) and Computer Science (1975) and from Sangamon State University, now the University of Illinois-Springfield.
Harry was employed as a Technical Engineer for Illinois Bell Telephone Company (1952-1955) and Sangamo Electric Company (1955-1971). He was Associate Director of Operations at Southern Illinois School of Medicine (1971-1978). He was also employed as a Test Engineer for Fiat-Allis Construction Machinery (1978-1981). During this period, he also found time in the evenings to serve as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Sangamon State University (1977-1987).
Harry completed his career as a Manager for the Bureau of Information and Communication Services, State of Illinois (1981-1993).
Harry was a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church beginning in 1946 and later became ordained as a Deacon for the Diocese of Springfield, assisting with many services, weddings and memorials for several decades.
He passionately served as Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 7 based at Christ Church for many years. He challenged young men to develop their skills and will be remembered by many for the camping trips and hikes in central Illinois, as well as the number of Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle during his watch.
Harry and Betsy met sailing at Island Bay Yacht Club in 1951 and have been active members for 64 years. Annual summer family camping and canoe trips to northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan were highlights for Harry and his family.
Harry was a strong hiker and, when visiting family in Washington State, he took the opportunity to summit several peaks in the Cascade Range with his son.
Near retirement, he became a proficient bagpiper and seized any opportunity to march in a parade in Illinois, as well as in Washington.
In the twilight years, Harry and Betsy were active serving others with the Meals on Wheels program in Springfield.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Giampetro.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betsy of Bellevue, Wash.; son, Harry George (wife, Ginny) Newman III of Bellevue, Wash.; daughter, Mary Ellen Newman of Springfield; two grandchildren, Caressa (husband, Tim) Libs of Snohomish, Wash., and Ali Newman of Springfield; great-grandson, Parker Libs of Snohomish, Wash.; brother-in-law, George Giampetro, Sr., of Coral Gables, Fla.; two nieces, Sandy Fox of Savoy, Ill., and Kathi Durham of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; three nephews, Jim Corrington, Jr., of Phoenix, Ariz., Gil Corrington of Springfield, and George Giampetro, Jr., of Miami, Fla.

Betsy, George and Mary Ellen -
I was saddened to hear of Harry's passing. Though it has been many years since I moved from Springfield, I have fond memories of my time spent there with Troop 7 and Christ Church. Harry was THE Scoutmaster - he always seemed to know what to do or how to do it. He made hikes, camping trips and canoe outings fun and exciting at a time when we were boys learning how to be young men - and he was such a good leader and role model for us.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Betsy and Family,
I am so saddened to hear of Harry's passing. Harry was one of the most kind, caring, funny, and intellgent individuals I have ever had the gift, joy, and pleasure of knowing. What a blessing it was to have Harry in my life and to be able to call him a dear friend. May God provide you all with comfort, strength, peace, and love during this very difficult time. Please let me know if there's anything that I can do. With deepest sympathy,
Madeline

I'd like to add a side of Harry that hasn't been mentioned yet. He was also a visionary in his own right. In the early 80's when he was at CMS and I was at SSU, he help us get connected to this new thing call ARPANET. Sangamon.edu was the 3rd connection in Illinois and probably one of the first 100 or so connections to what would become the Internet. He knew then this was going to change the world.
Deep thinker, kind man, true gentleman.
My prayers to the family.

Betsy,
I have the fondest memories of Harry and all the time we spent together when I was younger. I learned so much from him. I will always remember his upbeat personality, and the sound of him practicing his bagpipes outside. He was an absolutely wonderful person and we will miss him dearly. Our condolences to you and your family

Dear Betsy, George, and Mary Ellen,
I have very fond memories of Harry and your family while I was growing up in Springfield. Harry led an interesting life and always had something new and exciting to share. He was the first person I encountered who knew anything about computers. As my boy scout leader, Harry had an impact on my receiving an Eagle Scout Badge.
Both Harry and Betsy were vibrant and welcoming when I returned to Springfield as an adult. I always enjoyed seeing them upon my return to Christ Church as did my wife. We were one of those couples who were married under Harry's watch. You will be missed!

To the Newman family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences and sympathy for the passing of Mr. Newman. Harry was a fine man and a talented musician.
I worked with Harry at CMS. He was always cooperative and had a smile on his face. As a member of the Municipal Band, I was able to be with Harry on special occasions when he played his beloved bagpipes, especially on the tune "Amazing Grace."
Rest in peace, Harry, and may God bless you and your family. Semper Fi Marine!
