Jean Samuelson Obituary

BUZZARDS BAY —

Mrs. Jean Mary Samuelson, age 90, surrounded by family, friends and music, died on May 8, 2009, at Bourne Manor Nursing Home on Cape Cod.

Growing up in Arlington, Jean graduated from Arlington High School, and then Boston University in 1941. A charter member, she played the violin with the Hingham Civic Orchestra. With the Hingham Civic Chorus, she participated in a number of musical productions during the '50s and '60s.

She was also an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hingham and sang in the choir for many years. Her enjoyment of camping in a converted motor coach led her and her husband to help form the Family Motor Coach Association in 1963.

Following her retirement in 1980 as an elementary and junior high music teacher with the Hingham public schools, she lived for 23 years in Sarasota, Fla., where she was a member of The Church of the Redeemer and played violin with the Sarasota Orchestra. During the Sarasota years, Jean and her husband drove their RV each summer to Massachusetts, usually staying in Hingham and on the Cape.

Jean was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Loye Anderson. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John T. Samuelson of Buzzards Bay; three daughters, Janet and her husband Don Kowalsky of Hiawassee, Ga., Judy and her husband Peter Spinney of Andover, N.J., and Joanne and her husband Robert Chandler of Wareham; grandchildren Heidi Levine of Roseland, N.J., Todd Spinney of Leominster, Mark Spinney of Fairlawn, N.J., Sara Ferguson of Winchester, David Kowalsky of Asheville, N.C., Marianne Colley of Mashpee, and Jim Colley of Boston; four great-grandchildren; and six nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 11, at St. Peter's on the Canal, 165 Main St., Buzzards Bay.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod, 712 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
