SPRINGFIELD, IL - Joe Fortner, 51, of Springfield, passed away at 5:07 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Memorial Medical Center.
Joe was born Oct. 17, 1963, in Elgin, Ill., the son of Joseph L. and Susan Fortner. He married Lisa Borgard on Sept. 21, 2002, in Sevierville, Tenn.
Joe was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Joe was an expert marksman and a life member of the VFW 755. He was a manager at Family Dollar in Springfield and previously employed by Staples. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, grilling out, and was a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and Bears.
Joe is survived by his wife, Lisa Fortner of Springfield; his two beautiful daughters, Jessie (Josh) Sipinski of Elgin and Olivia Fortner of Springfield; two grandchildren, Cole and Brynn Sipinski; his parents, Joseph and Susan Fortner of Elgin; and nine nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering and Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at St. John's Lutheran, 2477 W. Washington St., Springfield with Pastors Greg Busboom and Ladd Sonnenberg officiating.

I worked for joe at staples. He was the best person i have yet to meet. He will be deeply missed. I just found out today almost a year later and it has been difficult.

So sorry to hear about Joe's passing. When we moved to the neighborhood from Athens, he was the first neighbor to welcome us. We were unaware of his passing and would certainly have visited if we knew. Our condolescences to the entire family. Our prayers are with you.

I met Joe right after my new FD opened in July of 2012. He was a very funny man & a Great Co worker. He made a real difference in his store. Joe was a good person & I will miss seeing him at our meetings. I didn't know his family but I heard a lot about his little girl Olivea .. Joe was way too young to be gone.. RIP Joe.. I'll miss U

Joe was one those people I will never forget!!! I will always cherish are talks at Shell and miss your face everyday and you stubborn eat!! He was such a great person!!!
