Joe Robert Griffin
HAVANA, IL - We are saddened to announce the passing of our husband and father, Joe Robert Griffin. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with family on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013.
He was born April 5,1934, to Clarence and Adelaide Griffin in Havana. He led a very fulfilling life with many highlights. In his mind, his greatest accomplishment was his unwavering devotion to Marte, his wife of sixty years, and their eight children. Through their love and nurturing, they created a unique environment of closeness that spans generations.
Professionally, he worked as an electrician, beginning in his father's business and ending with his own business, Joe Griffin & Sons Electric. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Havana where he belonged to the former chapter of Knights of Columbus.
The City of Havana was very important to him and he was involved in many organizations, including Jaycees, Optimists, Volunteer Fire Department and Little League. He also served on the Cemetery Board and was a Township Trustee.
He was an avid Cardinal fan and enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and any card game. After retiring, he and Marte enjoyed many winters at Long Island Village in Port Isabelle, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Thomas Brian Griffin.
He is survived by his wife, Marte; three sons: Tim of Havana, Tod (Trish) of Sugarland, Texas and Tony (Sue) of Hinsdale, Ill.; four daughters: Jennifer (Tim) Karrick of Havana, Jeanne (Tom) Cole of Jamison, Penn., Joni (John) Keegan of Alamo, Calif., and Julie (Ted) Contri of Sherman, Ill.; one brother, James Griffin, and one sister, Martha Williams, both of Havana; sister-in-law and husband, Rosemary and Buck Knowles of Macomb; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A friend to all, he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, Aug, 18, 2013, at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Rosary will be recited following visitation. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Havana. Father David Whiteside will officiate. Following the funeral mass, cremation rites will be accorded and a private family burial will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana at a later date.
Memorials may be made to his church or Mason District Hospital.

Marte and family,
I was so sorry to hear the news of Joe's passing. Even though I only met him (and you) once, you both made quite an impression on my with your friendliness and humor. My thanks to both of you for helping me pull off a great practical joke on your son Tod and my friend, Trish! I'll always remember him fondly for that! Together, you and Joe produced a wonderful and loving family. You should be so proud. Please find comfort in the great memories during this difficult time in your life.

Our thoughts and prayers come from the Engel family. Our mother was Daisy Dufer Engel, Clarence's sister. Mom talked of Uncle Clarence and Aunt Ad's boys who had done so well in the electric business. She mentioned Joe.
May God bless you and keep you in His loving embrace.
