John S. Sidener 1926 - 2016
John S. Sidener, 90, of Springfield, passed away Monday, December 19, 2016 at St. John's Hospital surrounded by his family.
A lifelong resident of Springfield, he was born July 9, 1926 the son of James Thomas and Ruth (Canfield) Sidener. He married Betty Allison in 1949 and she preceded him in death in 1997. He was also preceded in death by his son Robert, four brothers, two sisters, a granddaughter, and three great grandchildren.
John served during W.W. II in the United States Army achieving the rank of Corporal. He earned the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Battle Star, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), Meritorious Unit Award, and a Good Conduct Medal.
John returned to Springfield and became the owner and operator of Sidener's Grandview Conoco and Towing 1962-1981 and continued operating Sidener's Towing Service until his retirement in 1991. John had a passion for racing and most week-ends could be found with his family at the track. He loved his family and enjoyed the times they shared together.
Surviving are his children: Thomas J. "Tom" Sidener of Springfield, Johnny R. (Diane) Sidener of New Berlin, IL, Sharon S. Sidener and Kathleen L Sidener both of Springfield, and Jeannette M. (James) Moughan of Rochester, IL. He has 17 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren, a brother, Robert Sidener, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The Sidener family will greet family and friends from 5-7 pm Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 at the Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen Springfield, IL
Service: A funeral service will begin at 10:30 am Friday, Dec. 23, 2016 at the funeral home with Rev. Mark Gifford officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
Those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the family c/o Marine Bank in Springfield.

I remember buying gas at Conoco in the 60/70's. This was always a family business and I couldn't wait till Mondays to see how wrecked up the race car was from the Sunday night races at the Springfield Speedway.
