Raymond W. Phipps, Jr. 1932 - 2021
Springfield, IL—Raymond W. Phipps, Jr., age 88 of Springfield, IL passed away at 7:11 PM, Monday, March 15, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.
A graveside service in his honor will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 22, 2021 at Shiloh Cemetery, 12988 East Lincoln Highway Road, Lerna, IL 62440. Reverend Ron Dickinson will officiate. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, located at 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services.
Raymond was on born November 11, 1932 in Virden, IL to the late Raymond W. Sr. and Mildred (Sims) Phipps. He married Pharra L. Newsom on May 21, 1958-1965 in Jackson, TN; he later married Paula (Phipps) of Springfield, IL from 1970-1985. He is survived by four children, Raymond W. Phipps III and wife Debbie of Missouri, Kathleen N. Flickinger and husband Richard of Longwood, FL, William T. Phipps and wife Katie of West Grove, PA, Lillian P. Johnston and husband Benjamin of Skokie, IL; seven grandchildren; and longtime companion, Sue Ellen Weitekamp of Springfield, IL. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Anna L. Phipps, and three sisters.
Raymond was the former owner and operator of WDXI Radio Station in Jackson, TN, and longtime broadcaster for Dixie Broadcasting Company in Jackson, TN, Midwest Family Broadcasting Company in Riverton, IL, and Illinois News Network in Springfield, IL. In addition, he was the former manager of the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, IL.
He was actively involved in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, IL where he served as a deacon. Always social and one to capture the attention of others, Raymond enjoyed many affiliations throughout the years. He was a proud member of the Rotary Club in Jacksonville, IL and Rotary International for many decades and a Paul Harris Fellow; a longtime member of the Sangamo Club of Springfield, IL; Sigma Delta Chi- Society of Professional Journalism; and board member of Shiloh Cemetery of Coles County, IL. As a true historian of all things Abraham Lincoln and an avid Civil War buff, Raymond took immense pride of being the founder and owner of the Abraham Lincoln Land and Cattle Company, Inc.
Raymond will be remembered for his eloquent, charismatic, and debonair ways. His legacy will live on through his loved ones.
