EDINBURG - Richard E. "Dick" Payne, 75, of Edinburg, died Saturday, March 27, 2010 in Grenada, Miss., while on a fishing trip with his son R.J. and friends.
He was born Oct. 4, 1934, in Nokomis, the son of Clarence R. and Ruth Durham Payne. He married his beloved Barbara A. Perry on Oct. 4, 1953 in Taylorville.
Mr. Payne was a retired Edinburg businessman owning several businesses in town dating back to 1970. Over the years he also sold automobiles and real estate in Taylorville and most recently could be seen working the crowd at the Edinburg auction. He was extremely active in the community as a town council member, volunteer fireman and always there whenever a hand was needed. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason and member of the Knights Templar. Dick strongly believed in service to others. As a member of the Lions Club he extended his service beyond Edinburg by fulfilling duties of district governor at the state level and supporting the many causes of Lion's International. Dick also enjoyed the outdoors and spent time hunting and fishing. He was a member of Edinburg Christian Church. The legacy he has left to his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and anyone who came in contact with him was service to others, hard work was its own reward and making the most of each day is a lifelong opportunity.
Survivors are his wife, Barbara; sons, Loren R. (wife, Debbie) Payne of Gilbert, Ariz., Richard J. (wife, Marilyn) Payne of Taylorville and Bryan C. (wife, Kami) Payne of Kincaid; grandchildren, Rich Payne, Andrea Younker, Tyler Payne, Adam Payne, Lacy May, Megan Hunsley, Cory Payne, Mason Payne, Shane Lucas and Tristan Payne; great-grandchildren, Chase Hunsley, Curt Hunsley, Owen Younker and Wyatt Younker; sister, Delores Burkel of Wisconsin; aunt, Helen Julius of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Barb and family - Gary and I were very sorry to learn of Richard's passing.
We were just talking the other day and reminiscing about some of the ski trips we had taken. Since Richard didn't ski, Gary remembered how he (Richard) would have snacks waiting at our condo at the end of the day or run back and forth getting beverages while we enjoyed the hot tub. We always had such a good time because both you and Richard were such fun loving people and so easy to get along with.
Please accept our deepest sympathies and we'll keep you in our prayers.
