William Mayfield Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - William E. Mayfield, 76, of Springfield died at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at St. John's Hospital.

He was born July 22, 1930, in Chicago, the son of George and Sophia Ratkie Mayfield. He married Susan Skelton in 1957; they later divorced.

William graduated from Cathedral Boys High School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with degrees in accounting and business management. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Korean War.

He was employed at Sangamo Electric Co. and was comptroller for the city of Springfield from 1967 to 1972. He was a self-employed tax accountant for Mayfield Accounting and Tax Service.

He was preceded in death by three daughters, Barbara Ann, Dorothy Ann and Mary Denise.

He is survived by one daughter, Cyndy (husband, Phil) Coats; two sons, William G. Mayfield and Roy (wife, Casey) Mayfield; four grandchildren, Kaitlin, Mary, Anthony and Sam Coats; two brothers, George (wife, Theodora) Mayfield and James (wife, Martha) Mayfield; two sisters, Irene (husband, James) Metz and Judith (husband, Jerry) Teater; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, May 4, 2007, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St. Funeral Mass will be held at noon Friday, May 4, 2007, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald J. Meehling celebrant. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense will perform military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northender's VFW 10302, 2349 Stockyard Road, Springfield, IL 62702.
