Corey Freedman Obituary

Anacortes - Boatsman and builder of traditional Aleutian kayaks, musician and beloved member of the community of Anacortes, Corey Freedman died on Monday, May 5 at age 63. Corey grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, many thousands of miles away from the Aleutian vessels and culture he first read about at 17. Eleven years later, in 1989, he arrived in Anacortes, having purchased a goat barn that he'd renovate into what became the Skin Boat School and Spirit Line Kayaks.

Corey had his first guest before he had running water, with only sleeping bags in the hayloft. For the next 35 years, he'd never turn anyone away from his home. His workshop (and classes at the Wooden Boats Schools in Seattle and Port Townsend) became a space where individuals from all walks of life and corners of the world came to build traditional kayaks called baidarka. For many, Corey also created a space for free expression and comfort. His boats, made of yellow cedar and nylon fabric, were incredibly lightweight and never touched by power tools. The New York Times covered Corey and his work twice, in 1998 and 1999. Reporter Tina Kelley wrote that Corey's "low-key manner" put his students "at ease immediately." Corey told Kelley of his boats, "If you do them right, they'll be like your personality. One may be playful, one may be conservative."

Corey's workshop and home was always full of food - from Italian family dinners to Asian stir-fries prepared in his beloved wok - and music. Corey taught himself how to play the acoustic guitar as a teen, strumming "House of the Rising Sun" over and over again. He performed locally alongside friends and bandmates at the Brown Lantern and in his home, and also played the harmonica and jaw harp. Corey loved his pet dogs, cats and birds, art, travel and photography. Later in life he fell in love with pickleball, a sport akin to the ping pong he enjoyed and dominated in his youth. His teammates remarked that he often played at all levels, a rarity in "good pickleball players."

In 1999, Corey told The New York Times, "I think it's a romance. People just fall in love with them, and they don't know why." He was talking about his kayaks. But he could have been talking about himself, his life, his presence in the community of Anacortes and beyond, the way people would fall in love with his exceptional energy, enthusiasm, gentleness and inclusiveness. Corey was a one-of-a-kind soul.

He's survived by his mother and father, Davita and Harold Freedman, also of Anacortes, Wash., sister, brother-in-law, and niece, Beth, Ron and Sukee Bennett of Boulder, Colo., and many, many dear friends. His family plans on celebrating Corey's life this summer on the local coastline he cherished. Details to follow.

Ron Snyder

July 20, 2025

My name is Ron Snyder and I was on the board of directors for 12 years at the Center For Wooden Boats in Seattle where Corey held many of his kayak workshops.
I have the rare good fortune to own Corey's first baidarka kayak. I was looking for a kayak skeleton to hang on my wall, and during a visit to his barn/shop he sold me his "chicken Coop" which is exactly the use it had at the time. He told me about how he walked the Washington coast beaches to find all of the top pieces of the kayak, and it only had 20 ribs (not 40 like his later kayaks), and there are shims to fill the spaces where things "don't quite fit right". It never had a skin as it was always meant to be a study skeleton for what was to come. That beautiful baidarka truly has a spirit, and has hung on our cabin wall for over 20 years.
My wife and I are adopted members of a Haida and Tlingit canoe family and we carve and paddle our big canoes in the yearly gatherings of native craft.
Corey will be missed, but for those of us who knew him and his amazing kayaks, he will always be on the sacred northwest water highways with us and our communities.

I met Corey virtually almost twenty years ago. Intelligent, affectionate, artistic, creative. As I heard in one of his interviews, when hearing them speak about the passion that boats awaken, one could say he was talking about himself. He will always be remembered, he will always be loved.

Corey Freedman- R.I.P.
A true force of Human Nature.
Teacher
Mentor
Spreading Inspiration and Joy like the gentle wakes of the hundreds, maybe thousands of skin boats that he inspired and guided people to build.
I only knew him in his first life, when he visited our little experiential high school in Bellingham. 1994. He brought one of his Baidarkas to show the kids. Before he left, he said, "You guys need to build an Umiak" We said "Riiight. What´s an Umiak?" He showed us how, and we did build that Umiak. 30 years later that vessel had carried hundreds of souls, old and young over the waters of the Salish Sea, including six long distance Canoe Journeys.
2024 - Another Umiak was born inspired by the SpiritLine (Corey)
He was truly a Freed Man. Open, Kind , Caring , Generous.

I grew up with Corey in northern NJ, about 35 minute outside of Manhattan; a far cry from Anacortes! All the sunsets we watched and the dozens of bluegrass festivals we attended in our youth, I had a hard time finding a picture. As a matter of fact, this is the only picture I found - and then I thought how perfect; it´s Corey paddling into a dream! Cheers to the dreamers and those who achieve their dreams; like my friend Corey.

As a fellow skin-on-frame boat builder, I received lots of kindness and good advice from Corey -- from how to apply his great 2-part poly, to lashing material, to basic kayak dimensions, to ideas about rigging. He loved his chosen work and loved to spread the word. He'll will be much missed.

Corey was a very dear friend of mine. I will always love and remember him. His death doesn't seem real and I cry as I write this. We spent many many hours on Second Life, Skype & WhatsApp together over the years. I learned about so much of his life, cooking/boats/photography, his family, friends and animals. I introduced him to the Carnivore Diet and he ended up loving it. We shared many recipes. We shared so many stories about life and love. We even watched lot's of movies together while enjoying popcorn. I hope to see Corey again one day. Corey, I'm going to miss you terribly. You were one of my very best
& special friends in life. Love you, always.

In Loving Memory of Corey

Corey did not live just one life,
but many lives,
woven together by dreams, courage, and an unquenchable thirst for adventure.

Beyond the world of flesh and earth,
he sailed the vast seas of Second Life,
not as a mere visitor,
but as a navigator of realms,
a builder of homes,
a warrior of distant shores,
and a friend to hundreds of souls.

There, amid digital waves and endless horizons,
Corey found another kind of freedom -
a place where he could raise sails to unknown winds,
drop anchor in safe harbors,
and chart courses through lands only the heart can truly see.

His ship carried him through countless adventures,
from quiet inlets where friendships blossomed,
to stormy waters where courage and imagination met.

To those who knew him in that world,
he was more than a name or an avatar -
he was a presence,
a companion,
a captain of shared journeys,
and a steadfast lighthouse for many.

This memorial stands not only for the life he lived on this side of the screen,
but for the rich, uncharted oceans he navigated in his second life -
oceans filled with stories, laughter, creation, and love.

He was, and always will be,
deeply loved,
by those who sailed alongside him,
and by those whose hearts he quietly touched
with the simple, timeless grace
of a sailor who knew that life is made not only of where we stand,
but of where we dare to voyage.

We are hosting ao online memorial day on June 7th in Second Life.

My husband knew Corey for years. He built a kayak under his instruction, and my husband lived in a treehouse on his property for a time when he first moved out here. Years later he allowed us to camp with our girl on his property. He was hospitable, a dog whisperer, a creative soul, an adventurer- he valued peoples´ freedom and their lives. He welcomed many in to his home, and turned no one away. We are grateful to have shared meals, bowls of his famous popcorn, and stories together. He had a good laugh, a big heart, and was 100% genuine- a rare find in a person. Despite differences and debates-a-many, my husband and Corey kept in contact through the years like brothers. My husband and Corey spoke only a few weeks prior to his passing, and we were just in Anacortes recently and spoke about visiting him soon. That was not to be.

Sorry we didn´t get another chance to visit. May his family be comforted by special memories shared with Corey throughout his lifetime, and to his friends who were lucky enough to know him, may your individual memories with this kind man live on in your minds and hearts.

Corey, an exceptional man and cherished friend. I had the pleasure of spending some quality time with him. He taught me how to serve, laughed over lunch, and exchanged many texts to keep in touch. He was honestly the kindest and most generous man I know. He named me "Ant-girl" because I wore a lot of black on the pickleball court. He made me laugh. He often sent me podcasts on various nutritional studies and theories. We debated; fiercely :). He lent me his Ape paddle, insisting I use it until I purchased one. I will cherish this paddle, including the label bearing his name. I miss you terribly, "Ant-man."

Dear Family and Friends of Corey . I was much saddened to hear of the passing of Corey .
I had known him simply through purchases from his shop enabling the building of my 2 kayaks way over the oceans in Australia . Also by talking to him , via of Skype medium that I think he was quite at home with . I found him to be both friendly and generous , I should add supportive and I am thinking quite creative. I would have liked to have met him and soaked up some of his energy . I am sure that he will be missed by many many .
My Condolences to his loved ones

Corey was all of the above and more. Godspeed and your Spirit will always be remembered for what you contributed to the Aleut Kayaking Culture. A love of an ancient tradition. I remember when you moved in and enjoyed the time helping build your home.

I was one of Corey's closest friend for 17 years.
We met in Second Life. We lived a life there, and trough phone/video calls.
I used to manage his websites and online things.
It took me a while to figure out what happened to him. To be honest, I still do not know.
Someone, please, contact me. If possible.

I spent a magical 3 weeks with Corey in 2008. I slept in the shop, often working to all hours of the night on a kayak. We ate crab, went for a drive in the Ural, played tennis, bottled "goop", made paddles, went kayaking.
That place was something special - it seemed full of freedom, where anything was possible if I just got up and made it happen. Corey was very generous with his time, materials and home. We hadn't spoken since, but I think of my time with Corey often. I'm sad to hear he's gone.

Met Corey at the pickleball courts - he sure learned that game in a hurry. He started the same time I did and shot to the stars in no time. He always said hello to me every time we were both there. I thought that was really nice. Also saw his dogs of course and they received many greetings when they were at the courts. Sometimes the dogs appeared before Corey and we knew he was in the parking lot ready to play.
