CURTIS . JOHNSON Obituary

March 13, 1941 - October 1, 2016

Curtis E. Johnson, a lifetime resident of La Conner, WA, died peacefully October 1, 2016. Curt and his twin brother, Kirby, were born March 13, 1941, to Curtis and Dorothy Johnson.

Curt graduated from La Conner High School in 1959. He received a degree from Stanford University in 1963. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served four years.

After leaving the Air Force, Curt came home to the farm he loved. Curt, along with his brothers, Kirby and Greg, incorporated Farms Northwest in 1968, making them 4th generation farmers in Skagit County. Curt dedicated his life to preserve farming in Skagit County. He was a longtime president of the Western Washington Agricultural Association.

Curt served as Skagit County's GOP chairman for four years, and attended the Republican National Convention in 1980.

At age 11, Curt and his brother, Kirby, got their first car, a 1931 Chevy, starting a lifetime love affair with antique cars. Curt and Deann enjoyed many West Treks in his 1928 Franklin.

Curt married Janet Hansen in 1966 and they had two daughters, Jessica and Erica. In 1983 he married Deann Youngquist Nelson and added another daughter and son to his family.

Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Dorothy Gerriets Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Deann, his daughter, Jessica Notaro (Chris) and their two children, Anthony and Ellie of Anacortes, his daughter, Erica Johnson of La Conner, Krista Nelson of Shoreline, Zach Johnson (Renee) of Easton, his twin brother, Kirby (Pam), his brother, Greg (Mary), Mother-In-Law, Everyln Youngquist, brother-in-law, Larry Youngquist (Sandi), nephews, Stephen Johnson and Sloan Johnson (Amanda), nieces, Sarah Thompson (Jeff) and Annie Johnson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Theodore Kim and the entire staff at the Merle Cancer Center. Your care and compassion was greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Dr. Nancy Llewellyn and the staff at Fidalgo Skilled Nursing Facility. Every person went above and beyond what was necessary to make Curt's stay as pleasant as possible.

At his request, there will be no services. A memorial will be held October 30th at 2pm at the Skagit Golf and Country Club.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Western Washington Agricultural Association, 2017 Continental Pl. #6, Mount Vernon, WA 98273, to keep Curt's legacy of sustaining farming in Skagit County would be appreciated.

I knew Curtis and his brother Kirby when we studied together in Mt. Vernon's Washington School, before I went on to Lincoln school and then Mt. Vernon High School and they went to high school in LaConnor--the two of them were at the top of our class, and I am as sure as I can be that they went on to be first-rate scholars in LaConnor and then at Stanford. After high school, I moved east first to Boston and then New Hampshire and finally Washington DC--which is why I have learned only today of Curtis's death. What I write here is therefore a much-belated (and certainly sincere) message of sympathy to his family and friends.

Curtis was a good man who was willing to stand up for what he believed in. His love for the Skagit valley farm land and the quaility of life of the valley is something for which he will be remembered.
I considered him a good friend and a man I really admired!
