GLADYS SCHAFER Obituary

Gladys Esther Schafer passed away on January 28, 2014, in Coeur d'Alene, ID with her eldest daughter, Beverly Butterfield, at her side. She was 89 years old.

Gladys was born October 5, 1924, to Otto & Clara Dierenfeld in Wall Lake, IA.

She was passionate about her love and service to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a devout member of the Lutheran Church. She was confirmed in June of 1942 and has always enjoyed the fellowship of the congregations to which she belonged. Gladys was known for her vibrant, cheerful, and loyal spirit by all who knew her and she will be woefully missed. She enjoyed traveling to visit her family throughout Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Conrad L. Schafer, her siblings Dorothy Terrall, Floyd Dierenfeld, Bernice Bettin, and Henry Dierenfeld, her son, Kenneth Schafer, her son-In-law, John R. Butterfield, and her grandson, Brandon Schafer.

She is survived by her daughters Beverly C. Butterfield and Kendra Range (married to Michael) and son Brice Schafer (married to Carolyn). She is also survived by her grandchildren Jennifer Danzig (married to Barry), Rebecca Butterfield, Kelly Leighton (married to Brian), Daniel Range, Nikki Range, and great grandchildren Christine Swanson, Ilysah Butterfield, Stacie Leighton, Christopher Leighton, and Luke Peck.

On July 10, 1943, Gladys married Conrad while he was serving for the United States Army. Soon after their marriage they moved to and settled in Storm Lake, IA. Gladys was devoted to the love and care of her husband and four children. When her children had grown and left the nest, she continued to share her love and caring by serving as a care giver to elderly women in her community. In 1993, ten years after Conrad retired, he and Gladys moved to Mount Vernon WA in close proximity to their son, Brice, and his wife, Carolyn. Gladys remained there after Conrad's death in 2003 until August 2013 when she moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 South 18th Street, Mt. Vernon.
