Hamilton H. Sandvig, 92, of Anacortes, Washington, died Monday, November 26, 2012 at his home in Anacortes.
He was born on May 3, 1920 on the family homestead in Dodson, MT to Christina and Jens Sandvig and was the sixth child in a family of eight children. In 1929, the family moved to Havre, MT and in January 1931 moved to Prosser, WA.
After graduation from Prosser High School in 1938, Hamilton joined his father and brother in the family business, Sandvig Motors Oldsmobile and GMC dealership.
When World War II began, he joined the US Army Medical Corps in April 1942 and was sent to Camp Barkley in Abilene, TX for basic training and Company Clerk training. From there he was transferred to the Induction Station in Lubbock, TX where he was trained as an x-ray technician and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In 1943 Hamilton was transferred to the Induction Station in New Orleans, LA where he was in charge of the x-ray department. When the war ended he was placed in the critical personnel category and served an additional year. He received an Honorable Discharge in May 1946.
Hamilton returned to Prosser to rejoin the family business. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served on many committees. Hamilton was also a member of the Prosser Jaycees and a charter member of the Prosser Lions Club. His project for the Club was development of the Riverside Park which continued on and was completed after he left Prosser.
He obtained his private pilot's license in 1947 and was a member of the Prosser Flying Club.
On October 17, 1948 Hamilton married Viola Hillier of Kennewick, WA and they had three children; Christina, Marianne, and Gary.
His dream had always been to have a hardware store and live on an island, so in 1963 he sold his share in Sandvig Motors and moved his family to Anacortes, WA where they opened, owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware store.
He was very active in Anacortes business and civic organizations. In 1966 Hamilton was Chairman of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Trade Promotion Committee. He was also Secretary/Treasurer and Chairman of the Retail Merchants Committee. During the late 1960s and 1970s Hamilton served on the Citizens Building Committee, the Christmas Decorations Committee, and started Ship Wreck Days in 1971. He brought back Ship Wreck Days in 1978 and it continues today. Hamilton was appointed to the Housing Authority in 1973 and returned to serve again in 1983. He served on the Board of the Directors from 1970-73. From 1995-2006, Hamilton provided the Anacortes American with local weather data from his home weather station. "Ham" and Viola sold the Coast to Coast store and retired in January 1983.
In 1993 Hamilton was honored by the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department with Resolution 1251. The resolution commended Hamilton for his service as a Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission member and an ACFL Forest Advisory Board member in service to the community for over 20 years. Hamilton was instrumental in the paving of Washington Park Loop Road and Sunset Beach parking.
