James Griffith Obituary

Burlington - Surrounded by his loving family, James succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis on October 4, 2025.

He was born on December 9, 1959 in Bellingham to parents George and Beverly Griffith who provided him with both a large family and a firm belief in God. James was close to his parents and was a good and supportive son.

James graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1978. He discerned a potential vocation as a priest and studied theology and philosophy in Canadian seminaries. He ultimately decided that this was not his path, but he remained devoted to his faith throughout his life. As for a profession, he followed his father and brothers into industrial inspection.

He married Cathryn Oliver in 1999 and was a faithful and loving husband. James was happiest at home, visiting with family. He was blessed with many nieces and nephews and loved being a part of their lives. His passions included motorcycle riding, tinkering around the house working on projects, and sharing his knowledge and capabilities with both family and friends. James always had time to answer questions and help others if he could. At heart, James was a teacher. He was also a talented artist and had a great sense of humor.

James was preceded in death by his parents, George and Beverly, his siblings, Lawrence, Catherine, Joseph, and John. He is survived by his wife, Cathryn, brother, Peter (Susan), sister-in-law Ruthie (John), numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses and families. Each of you holds a special place in his heart.

At the end of his life, James exhibited grace and confidence in God. He was very grateful for the presence of his beloved family, the quality of the care that he received, and for the prayers of hundreds of people, both known and unknown to him.

Services will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington, WA, on Friday, October 10, 2025 with Viewing at 10:00 am, Rosary Recital at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. James will be laid to rest at Bayview Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Reception in his honor will be held afterward at St. Charles Catholic Church.
