Mount Vernon - It was with tears that we watched you slip away to Heaven's gates. Our dear mother, Janice Jean (Hockett) Mathis joined the Heavenly chorus on March 14, 2025, at her home, surrounded by family: her brother Ray (Eva), sister Edna (Ken), all her children, and most of her grandchildren.
Janice was born on May 12, 1939, in Concrete, Washington. Though she was born in Concrete, her parents, Gordon and Sadie Hockett, were living up the hill at Lake Tyee just a mill pond in those days. There, she joined her brother Ray, and later, her sister Edna.
In time, the family moved to Wickersham, WA, just down the road from Acme. They farmed and milked cows through the war years, doing whatever needed to be done to get by. Her dad was a log truck driver, which took the family to different places for work, but Wickersham remained home.
Mom was a Dairy Princess in 1953 and graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1957. She worked and cared for kids until she met our dad at the Wickersham roller rink. They married in 1960, and soon after, Rod, Jeff, and Greg came along. The family lived in Burlington, Clear Lake, and Sedro-Woolley until moving to Eastern Washington in 1974.
There, Mom raised her family until we were all grown either off to serve or starting careers. Once we were up and going, Mom met and fell in love with Loren Mathis, a true gentleman. They married in 1986 and made homes in Afton, Wyoming, and later Missoula, Montana. When Loren got a job near Wenatchee, they moved back to Washington.
Mom loved her work at Kris Kringle's in Leavenworth and Cascade Auto Chevrolet in Wenatchee she truly loved being around people. After Loren ended his career at Alcoa, they both retired to Mount Vernon, WA, to be closer to family and enjoy time with the grandkids which she surely did! She lost her beloved Loren in January 2024.
She is survived by her sons, Rod (Vika), Jeff, and Greg (Amanda); three grandchildren, Jesseca, Vanya, and Emily; four great-grandchildren; she also leaves behind many dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mom kept a special place in her heart for Lane, Chad, Adam, Caleb, and their families.
She loved and touched so many throughout her life. To Mom, there was never a stranger just someone she hadn't fed or taken care of yet. Whether it was a ragtag kid we brought home, a co-worker, or a neighbor, she shared all she had.
Special thanks and love to nurse Kelli and neighbor Jan for all the help and care you gave to Mom.
Janice will be laid to rest next to her beloved Loren on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 1:00 PM in the Veterans Section of Union Cemetery, 1450 Wicker Road, Sedro-Woolley. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at Cascade Christian Church, 534 Township St., Sedro-Woolley. ~ As in Mom's life, all are welcome. ~ Please share your memories of Janice and sign the online guestbook at
