Joel Zediker Obituary

Burlington - Joel Dean Zediker March 24, 1957 - October 16, 2022 Joel Dean Zediker passed away peacefully in his home early Sunday morning, surrounded by his loving family. Joel was born on March 24, 1957 in Denison, Iowa to George and Ramona Zediker. The family moved to Burlington when Joel was 6 weeks old and Joel became a lifelong Skagit County resident as well as an eventual Eagles member. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1975 and then Chehalis Community College in 1978, where he pitched for the baseball team. He also played semi pro baseball for the Bellingham Bells from '77 to '79 and was scouted by the Phillies in '79. On his second day of tryouts he injured his shoulder, which ended his pitching career. After college Joel worked for Rural Sanitation, which later became Waste Management, until 1990 when he was hired at Puget Sound Refinery. He was proud of his 31 years at the refinery and was an integral part of maintaining the complex systems associated with keeping us all fueled. Joel was married to Rochelle Griffin from 1980-2001 and they had two beautiful children together, Zach and Taryn. Joel coached Burlington Little League from 1989-1995 with his late father, George. He was also on a local bowling league with George from '78-'90. He spent many years restoring his prized possession, a 1964 and 1/2 firetruck red, white top Mustang convertible. Joel married the love of his life, Jamie Sue Starks on May 22, 2004. They blended their families and celebrated 18 years together this past May. Joel was likewise the king of family gatherings and loved parties and cooking on the grill. He was a very talented and passionate craftsman and spent all of his spare time creating his dream property. He loved watching sports and traveling with his family. He is survived by wife Jamie; sons Zach (Chikage), Sean and Reed; daughter Taryn; grandchildren Hikari and Misaki; sisters Amy (Rob) and Laura (Ron) and several nieces and nephews. Joel is preceded in death by his loving parents George and Ramona. Viewing at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA on Friday, October 21st from 12:00PM to 4:30PM. Joel's memorial service will be held on Monday, October 24th at 1:00PM at Communion Church located at 1003 S 3rd St, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Joel always wanted to buy the BFD a new fire truck if he won the lottery and they were instrumental in helping Joel over the last several weeks when he needed assistance getting in and out of the house. My condolences to the Zediker family. I was truly shocked when a mutual Joel's and mine called me and told me of Joel's passing. The last time Joel and I spoke was a couple of years ago. We talked about travel and retirement. Since we had been classmates Joel suggested that when we turn 65 years of age we should get several of our former classmates together and celebrate. We are now 65 now but never got to do that so I guess we'll just have to celebrate when we meet again.

I just learned of Joel´s passing , he was an old friend that did a good job of keeping in touch - we were competitors in high school but became closer friends and teammates when we went off to Centralia College to play baseball- he was my roommate and teammate there and we played together with the Bellingham Bells and WWU. I was on deck at Sick´s Stadium at the Phillies tryouts the day his arm failed him - he was something when he pitched - long, confident and hard to hit - keep throwing high and hard my friend and I know you enjoyed life and will be missed - RIP- Murray Tweit

I remember moving to Burlington in 1966 and Joel and his family lived just down the street. We became fast friends with our love of sports. I truly am sorry to hear of his passing and that of George (who coached us in little league) and Ramona. My the Good Lord bring laughter and joy to his family as Joel did for my family.

Cousin Joel, there´s not a childhood memory from a family reunion where you weren´t the life of the party. Your laughter was contagious and your acceptance of people knew no boundaries. You will be missed but forever cherished.

I grew up with the Zediker family. My first teacher in Kindergarten was his mother, as she was my daughters first teacher. A first in her teaching career to have 2 generations. All Joel's siblings were marvelous, kind people. Always helpful as the family they came from. Went through all our schools and grades with the family of siblings. My father worked with George on construction quite often. Just all around fine folks. My sympathies to all the extended family. Such a great heritage you share locally. And to Rochelle, a friend from school also.

I am saddened to hear of Joel's passing. I knew Joel from the credit union and was always happy to see him. The love and joy that showed on his face when he talked about Jamie and his family was beautiful. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone, his smile and laugh were infectious. Heaven gained a special angel, he will be missed.

Joel was a classmate and friend through grade school and high school. He always had a great sense of humor and a positive outlook. We had lot of good times. He was the founding member of the band " Johnny Jive and the 4+5." BEHS Class of 75 will remember that one! Joel was always genuine and a good person

I am heartbroken to read of Joel's passing. He was definitely a favorite of mine! I still remember when I first met him out in the pea fields working nights. I can still hear his wonderfully infectious laugh. I will surely miss running into him out and about town and our impromptu "catch-ups". My deepest condolences to all of the family. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I was so saddened to hear about Joel. I was lucky enough to get to meet him for the first time in 2014 and worked with him for 5 years. Joel was such a positive and jovial person to be around he made the shift enjoyable. He always made the new hires feel like part of the team right away, engaging in conversation and sharing his experiences on the unit. One graveyard I was cooking a steak. Joel got one look at it and said "No Greg, I will cook you one tomorrow night" To this day that was one of the best steaks I have ever had. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family. What a blessing to have had this man in your life..

Condolences to the family. Remember Joel well in the 80's when we got together to play cards with others. Or an occasional drop by just to say Hi. His sense of humor was contagious. Laughed till we cried. Then later, always seemed to run into him at Fred Meyers when we went shopping. Am going to miss you good friend. Rest in Peace.

Dear Joel - the very last time I saw you, we shared tears together in the unit truck as I drove you down to your working unit. You we're torn about your Fathers' passing. I'm currently in the same state with both my parents on Hospice care and I'm the primary care taker. YOU LOVED your Dad, and I sure do love mine. My memories of you are very fond, very funny - and I'll miss all of you're laughing :-) See you on the other side brother. You are now on your next stop to this never ending journey....I'll catch up with you when the time is right. Cheers bro, Jeff

We will treasure our memories of laughter and fun during our week in Cabo with Joel and Jamie November 2021. One of my favorite memories is Joel and Jason (my husband) posing with chunks of seafood hanging out of their mouths. Jamie, Joel, and Jason devoured a monster sized seafood tower all by themselves! Check out the photo.... Amber Guidry
