Kimberly Smith-Somers Obituary

Mount Vernon - Kimberly Amanda Somers (nee Smith) passed away in Seattle July 10, 2024 of complications following heart surgery. Kim was born into a military family at Fort McClellan, Alabama, November 24, 1959. She grew up in Springfield, Virginia and graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. with a double major in Government and English, later followed with a master's degree in H.R. Kim married a Navy man, Steve Somers, a partnership based on love, laughter and shared devotion to always being available to help. Kim and Steve moved to the Skagit Valley to raise their son, Kevin Somers, who was the center of her life until that role expanded with the birth of granddaughter Brooke Amanda Somers. Kimberly had a successful career in human relations, including at the Skagit Valley Herald and Whatcom Transit Authority. She was a skilled seamstress and quilter and an avid genealogist, relentlessly documenting all leads' for family and friends. Kimberly is preceded in death by her mother Susan Ann Kuhns and father Ralph Lawrence Smith. Survivors' include her brother Michael Smith and sister-in-law Linda of Oak Ridge, TN; husband Steve and son Kevin (and fiancé Liz) of Mount Vernon, WA and the proclaimed love-of-her-life, granddaughter Brooke.

At her request, there was no service. Kimberly asked that donations, if desired, be made to your local humane society.

Kimberly and I became friends when Kevin attended Mount Baker Middle School and she was very active in the Parent Group when I was principal. I loved her warmth, wisdom, and beautiful nature. She cared deeply about others. Kevin and Steve, you will remain in my prayers. I am profoundly sorry you lost your amazing wife and mother.
