La Conner - Laverne Schroeder Campbell was born to Bill and Alice Schroeder on October 8, 1938, in Mount Vernon and she passed away peacefully on April 8, 2023 with her husband of 66 years by her side.
Laverne is survived by her husband Gary Campbell; their son, Kirk (Susan Musselman) Campbell; daughter, Kerri (Darrell) Newcomer; grandchildren, Bryson (Kari) Campbell and their daughter Collins Campbell, Landen (Haley) Campbell and their son Beau Campbell, Ellery Newcomer and Anna Newcomer; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Arnold, Kenneth, Clifford, Quinton and Dwayne; sister, Arlene; and infant daughter KayAnn.
Laverne had a love for horses since childhood. Growing up on a dairy farm, she befriended a heifer to the point of allowing her to ride it, since a horse wasn't in the budget. Nine horses trotted their way into and out of the growing Campbell family, beginning their stays at the Skagit Valley Riding Club where Laverne enjoyed an active membership. She rode in numerous horse shows, was a member of Northwest Border Zone, Gateway City Patrol, a mounted drill team, and a leader for the La Conner Horse 4-H group Chaps-N-Hobbles. She could also be found helping at horse shows in a secretarial role as well as at the Skagit Valley Fair where 4-H showed their horses. She started the Rockin' Hossie-Enda Ribbon business that produced award ribbons primarily for horse shows nearby. Laverne enjoyed a variety of crafts through the years including leatherwork, sewing, knitting, crocheting, beadwork, macramé, candle-making, tin can crafting and her true passion, quilting. The quilting bug wove its way into her life generating an outpouring of quilts for cherished family members as well as charities including youth football auctions, local victims of domestic violence, and Hero Quilts for wounded service men and women. She was a member of the Fidalgo Island Quilt Guild, enjoyed her work at the La Conner Quilt Museum, and later provided quilting services with the purchase of a Longarm Quilting Machine.
Laverne generously shared her time making homemade gifts for family, supporting her kids and grandkids in their sporting endeavors, providing delicious food for many occasions and events. Her subtle wit and generous heart will be greatly missed.
Laverne's family wishes to express thanks to the Hospice of the Northwest for their care and support, to all that helped in her final days, as well as her special caregiver Heidi.
Memorials may be given to the La Conner Volunteer Firefighters Association or to Hospice of the Northwest.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Bay View Cemetery, Mount Vernon, followed by a reception at the La Conner Civic Garden Club, 622 South 2nd St. at 3:00 PM. You may offer your condolences and share memories of Laverne online at
