Marcia Brevoort Obituary

Mount Vernon - Marcia Lee Brevoort, daughter of Virginia Hart Gibbons and Howard William Brevoort, passed away in Seattle on March 10th. Marcia was born in Mineola, on Long Island, NY. She graduated from Garden City High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Celestones choral ensemble. Marcia graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and earned a MA from Hofstra University In Uniondale, NY. Her Master's Thesis was on Thornton Wilder; she had a lifelong affinity for Wilder's play Our Town.

Marcia worked at Harper and Row Publishers in New York City before moving to Seattle in the mid-1970's. In Seattle Marcia was an active member of University Congregational United Church of Christ. Living in the "U District", Marcia did childcare for children of graduate and medical students. She volunteered at the American Lung Association. While living at the Theodora residence, she was always an advocate for others and served on the Residents Council. Marcia was an avid correspondent, mailing letters and cards to "stay in touch" with family and friends, including three treasured friends from college days.

Marcia lived with bipolar illness and was a member of the Seattle chapter of NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness from its formation in the 1970's. She was proud to attend a national NAMI convention in Washington, DC.

In 2011 Marcia moved to Skagit Valley. She enjoyed volunteering at the Mount Vernon Senior Center Gift Shop. Marcia loved going to movies, opera, and concerts at the Lincoln Theatre and McIntyre Hall.

Marcia lived in assisted living in Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon for several years. In 2020 she moved home from assisted living in Mount Vernon due to the pandemic. A team of dedicated friends visited her to read mysteries, sing, chat, play the piano, color, knit hats, watch hummingbirds, and go for walks around the neighborhood. Marcia thought deeply about her faith. She was connected with communities at the Mount Vernon Center for Spiritual Living, Skagit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and her Seattle UCUCC church, always loving the music.

Marcia is survived by her siblings, Janet, Doris, and Roger; cousin Judi; nieces Emily, Lauren, and Katie; nephews Thomas and Jonathan, and an extended family of friends, caregivers, health providers and people who helped in so many ways.

A memorial celebration will be held for Marcia on Sunday, May 5, 12:30pm at Skagit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Mount Vernon, in person and on zoom. Refreshments will be pie and ice cream.

Contributions in Marcia's honor may be given to Washington NAMI (www.namiwa.org), Meals on Wheels, or any organization dedicated to relieving famine around the world.
