Owen Morton Obituary

Ferndale - On May 17th, 2024, Owen Benjamin Morton tragically died as a result of a dirt bike accident at Hannegan Speedway. At just 14 years old, he was thrilled to be getting into racing. For a boy who hated to lose, Owen embraced every bit of falling down and getting back up at the track. He didn't mind being teased by his best friends Rhyder and Elliot, who were there to support him during his first races. He gave himself the grace to be a beginner and loved every element of dirt biking, never minding losing to girls or anyone else. Owen was likely at his happiest leading up to the point where he ultimately could not get back up.

Owen was born on January 11th, 2010. He spent most of his life on Central Road in Everson, WA. Just last year, he moved to Ferndale but stayed in the Meridian School District where he had grown up. Owen was looking forward to living with his dad in Burlington and trying a new school in September. He grew up on a lot of land and, although at one point he lived with 9 chickens, 2 cats, and a dog, he never had enough pets. He always held animals close to his heart.

Life was not always easy for Owen. Although one could consider him practically a professional at defeating himself, he was a brilliant problem solver. He was a quiet child, sometimes overwhelmed by chaos and rowdiness, but he would honor these pieces of himself and learned to grow around his challenges. Owen was also silly, witty, and quite charming to be around. He was kind and sensitive. Like most middle schoolers, school was not his favorite thing, but he loved playing percussion in jazz band. He enjoyed all different kinds of music and often looked forward to his bass lessons. He was active and enjoyed the freedom of riding around town on his bicycle, alone or with friends. If he wasn't avoiding homework while playing video games, he found more creative ways to do so. He was quite talented at drawing pickles and helped others find their own similar talent as he recruited many other pickle-drawing artists.

Many are heartbroken by Owen's unexpected loss and are wishing for more time with this beautiful soul. Owen will always be loved deeply by his parents and sister: Benjamin Morton, Tiffany Morton, and Piper Morton, along with many others. Please join in remembering Owen on June 8th from 3 to 5:30 PM at Evergreen Gardens, 698 W. Pole Road, Ferndale, WA. This is a chance to gather, laugh, cry, and share the love that will live on in our hearts.

I loved hanging out with him I miss hearing his voice. He was like a light house, always kind happy and ready to help. He was the person everyone would want to be around even if they didn't know him.It is hard to not see him in a lot of places but I know he is in a better place.

It´s been a while, I think everyone still thinks about you a lot. I miss you and braiding your hair quite a bit. I was so surprised when you got your mullet, but you rocked it. My mom said you looked like you were in a 90s boy band when you first got it lol. Anyway, it´s rough, lots of reminders of you everywhere, but it´s better than forgetting. He was truly an amazing person, with a stomach aching sense of humor. Losing him had a impact on everyone. I know it´s said a lot after someone passes, but he truly lit up every room he went into. He had a little ball of sunshine always gleaming on his chest, and even when his light was dimmed, he managed to always make others glow brighter. This is kind of all over the place with a bunch of unrelated stuff shoved in each crack, but I´d like to eat drumsticks with you on my couch one more time.

It's been a little while since the accident and it's still been rough without you. It's like a break in my life. I would go to his house at least once a week if not more. It's been very hard without that friendship.

I´ve known Owen Since he was born - I worked with Tiffany at the BAC. Owen was a sometimes difficult baby, he had a very special place in my heart. I loved the challenge of keeping him happy. We enjoyed early mornings at the lake where we referred to Owen and Piper as our precious cargo - hope tub time after we skied was his favorite. There was one time when I went back to kids club and went to hug Owen and I asked him `Owen, when did you get so big?!´ He grabbed my face, looked me in the eyes and said `well Jessie, it´s cuz I´m fo and three quatas!´ (Four and three quarters) He will be missed by everyone!I love you, sweet boy!

I never met Owen but my son attends MMS. I went to the band concert this past fall and when I came home I told my husband about this kid with a mullet who was so fascinating to watch because his love of playing music was so evident and he just had this amazing energy. I didn't know it was Owen until I saw the Facebook posts about the accident. I'm so sorry for Owen's family and friends but I hope it's comforting for them to know that even complete strangers were drawn to his light while he was here.
