PAUL SUND Obituary

Our much loved and loving father and husband, Paul N. Sund, passed away at age 87 on July 18, 2020 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.

He was born in Minnesota but spent most of his growing years in Hollywood, CA, graduating from Hollywood High and then U.C. Santa Barbara. He met his wife Lorraine while doing graduate and post-graduate work in Zoology and Oceanography at the Univ. of Washington in Seattle.

Paul leaves his wife of nearly 64 years, Lorraine; his son Paul Eric (wife Pam); daughter-in-law Diana Santos; his brother Roger Sund (wife Evelyn); and many close friends. His son Alan passed away in 2017.

Paul was always adventurous, taking advantage of any and all challenges. He managed a huge L.A. paper route (while driving a converted Model A) plus called square dancing and led an entertainment group of dancers all while in high school. Surfing, scuba diving and hunting wild boar with bow and arrow were some of his adventures while in Santa Barbara. He was the first to introduce scuba diving to the students and faculty at the U. of W. Friday Harbor Labs while a student there in the 1950's.

His first job was with the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission based in San Diego. From there he moved to Washington, DC to work for the Dept. of Commerce helping to open a new laboratory in Miami, FL. He went on many tuna research expeditions to Central and South America and Africa, producing numerous publications.

After retiring from NOAA and government service in 1989, he continued working at the Hopkins Marine Station and the TRCC facility at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. His happiest days were spent working with tuna at the TRCC facility.

His hobbies through the years included coaching T-ball and Little League with his sons, small plane owning and flying, owning and restoring Model A's and vintage cars, playing stringed instruments (guitars, banjos, and ukuleles), and having a hand and voice in local marine affairs. He even spent time selling See's candy "for the fun of it" and playing in a local music group called The Backyard Band!

Paul was born and raised Lutheran and always had a church home wherever he was located. He loved and missed his many friends as Parkinson's overtook his mind and movement. At his request there will be no service, just a quiet dispersal of his ashes at a location of his choice.
