Philip LaMay Obituary

Mount Vernon, Washington - Philip Wallace LaMay passed away on November 25th, 2024 at the age of 71. He passed peacefully in his sleep. Phil or "flipper" as he was known by friends and family, was born in Walla Walla, WA in 1953. By age 7, he had moved to the Skagit Valley with his Mother and siblings. During high school at MVHS, Phil took an interest in golf, a family passion passed on through his older brother and father. Graduating from MVHS in 1971, Phil attended Western Washington University and played golf for the Vikings. He completed his AA degree in 1974 at Grays Harbor CC.

After college, opportunities and interests guided Phil to Reno, Nevada where he met the first love of his life, Vicki Baker. They were married in 1981. Vicki had two children Steven and Tammy. Phil was a wonderful stepfather, claiming them for his own without condition or prerequisite. They also loved him as their father. Phil and Vicki moved to California where they lived happily until Vicki's untimely passing in 1994. Phil remained connected to Steven and Tammy and their future children, exchanging birthday and Christmas cards and frequent visits.

After Vicki's death, Phil moved back to the PNW. He spent several years working as a realtor in Olympia, WA before moving back to Skagit County where he met his second wife, Kate.

Phil had several careers. House painter, ship worker, card dealer, realtor and transporter were all titles he held throughout his professional life. All of these were only avenues for Phil to pursue his life's passion, which was golf. He, along with his brother Lou, were instrumental in teaching the foundation of the game to his two nephews, who still play consistently today thanks to their uncles.

Phil was preceded in death by his father, Wallace (1962); His mother, Marie (1984), His wife, Vicki (1994); His brother, Louis (2012); His sister, Elaine (2015). Phil had a son, Daniel, who died from SIDS in 1979.

Phil is survived by his brother Chuck (Jan), nephews Mikkel and Dane LaMay, niece Mistie Del Bosque, stepchildren Steven Baker and Tammy Baker and numerous grandchildren, grandnephews, grandnieces and most recently a great grandniece.

Phil was a loved and valued member of the LaMay family. We will miss him. Rest easy, Flipper. May all your drives be straight and all your putts be true. A celebration of life will be planned for this summer.

Phil was a year behind me at Mount Vernon High School. He was one of the stars of the all-school play, "The Night of January 16th". I remember the rehearsals fondly because there was so much laughing involved. I am glad to read that he was much loved in his life. May he rest in peace.
