THOMAS JUNKERSFELD Obituary

"Tommy J." passed away from injuries sustained after being struck by a falling tree limb while out on his daily walk on December 21, 2020. Later that day, Tommy's family was at his side at St. Joseph Hospital. He was able to receive their goodbyes before he passed peacefully. Tommy was born October 7, 1942 in Washington, D.C. to Leo and Savilla Junkersfeld. Tommy was raised in McLean, Virginia, attended Catholic schools, and was a U.S. Senate page during his senior year.

He graduated from the University of Arkansas and was a proud Razorback. Tommy was also a huge University of Washington Husky football and Sedro-Woolley High School sports fan. He married Marilyn Elisabeth Beal on December 22, 1984.

He worked for many years in sales; in later years at the Mount Vernon Carpet Center. Tommy was a friend of Bill W. for 38 years and a sponsor to many. He and Marilyn have been active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for many years.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jerry, and Marilyn's daughter Mary.

He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Beal-Junkersfeld, sister Keith Sweeney, children Cheri (Noel) Ottaviano, Scott (Melissa) Varady, Sara (Jeff) Willard, and Stacey (Glen) Slick, Tommy's grandchildren Joanna (Andy), Joshua (Sarah), Daryl, Nathan, Emily, Devin (Alivia), Kailey and Carsten, great-grandson Harrison; Marilyn's children Jack Jr. (Lori) Ballard and Kelly (Frayne) Ballard, Marilyn's grandchildren Dexter (Courtney), Kyle (Dannica), Kenny, Erienne and Heather, and many loving relatives and friends. We met Tommy and Marilyn on thanksgiving 17 years ago in Coeur d Alene Idaho. We took a liking to the both of them and became good friends since then. Our friendship has meant a lot to us. We had the common bound of sobriety and Catholicism which made our foursome that much more special.
Tommy had a great sense of humor and was a guy I could turn to, to talk when needed. I have to say I did not always look forward to walking with him as he was a pretty fast walker and it was hard to keep up. His company and conversation was worth it though. The four of us had walks in Coeur d Alene, Id. , Bellingham Washington, and Palm Springs, Cal. We had such great discussions on faith and sobriety and he always had a book for us when we came to visit. We will miss him dearly and our prayers our with both Tommy and Marilyn.

Tommy was my dad’s (Fred Brunner) first cousin. I didn’t know him as well as I would have liked to. I only met him a few times at my Aunt Bernice’s home while the family was in town visiting Memphis relatives. These were good, joyful memories. He seemed to be a very kind and loving man. I know he was very well respected by my parents. I pray the family finds peace and will be comforted in the days ahead by the loving memories left behind.

Tommy J. was a special person to me, but I believe he was special to all who knew him because he was a decent, caring individual with a big heart. I know I am not alone in my sadness that I won’t run into him again and my heart is with his wife and family whose loss is so much greater. I’m grateful he was a guiding light for so many to learn to live one day at a time in gratitude, showing us what is important like family relationships, thinking about others, and realizing “it is in giving that we receive.” I feel blessed for having known him. He will live on in the hearts of so many.

Tommy J was a constant. I am so grateful for the many years we were home group members together at Into Action. He was always a great example of how to LIVE the program. Years have passed but I loved seeing him on my lake Padden walks. He was a kind man. God Bless.
