Michael Tragoutsis Obituary

Mike was born in Monessen, PA and raised in Manhattan, NY. He graduated in 1946 from Commerce High School. His family moved to Millbrae, CA in 1948. He worked at his family-owned grocery store at New Checker Market in San Francisco. After serving in the Korean War, he returned to the SF Bay Area. Mike and his brother Mark opened a new grocery store in 1953 called Sunnybrae Market in San Mateo.

He was an active member of the San Mateo Elks Lodge since 1963 playing handball and tennis at the Peninsula Golf & Country Club. In 1972, they sold the store and started their new venture and established Trag's Market in San Mateo. He retired in 1997. He was a caring husband/father and loved socializing with family and friends.

Survived by his wife Mary of 70 years; son John (Kim); grandchildren: Michael & Maria; brother Mark (Kaity); nephews: Matt (Cyndi) & Steven (Daron); niece Barbara Lentz (John+); and sister-in-law Carlene. Preceded in death by his brother Xenophone, niece Signe and sister-in-law Marilyn.

Trisagion service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023 followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Both services will be held at the Church of the Holy Cross, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas in Belmont. Interment to follow funeral service at St. John's Cemetery in San Mateo.

My deepest sympathy to your family. I met Mike many years ago when I was the first female to call on Trag's Market for Procter and Gamble. I also remember when Mike and Mike shared the Cadillac!!
