Phyllis Kilgore Obituary

Phyllis was born on September 26, 1936 in Eastern Nebraska. She grew up on a farm as the eldest of 8 siblings. After high school, Phyllis completed one year of teacher training at a normal school and taught briefly in a one-room schoolhouse. But, then she received a proposal by mail from California from her sweetheart, Wally, and they married on August 28, 1955 in Nebraska. Their honeymoon was a drive back to California from Nebraska with the Best Man.

After settling in Daly City, their son, Roger, was born in 1957. They moved into their home in Millbrae before their daughter, Linda, was born in 1959. Phyllis lived there until 2024 (65 years!) when she moved to The Magnolia in Millbrae. After raising her two children to be independent and follow their dreams, she entered the job market in multiple roles including office manager for an abrasives company and then a liquor importer (thank you Johnny Walker!). She also managed part of the website for the San Mateo County Transit District.

Phyllis enjoyed bridge, square dancing, and especially traveling. She visited all seven continents, all 50 states, and kept a log of every National Park she visited leaving only a handful unseen. She also was an active volunteer with the Millbrae Police Department and in preparing taxes for those needing assistance.

Phyllis left this life that we shared with her in the early morning of January 25, 2025 at the age of 88. She is survived by her children, Roger and Linda, grandchildren Christopher and Brittany, great grandchildren Pierce and Matilda, and siblings Sharon, Irene, and Dennis. Her legacy lives on in those whose lives she touched.

A funeral service will be at the Chapel of the Highlands (194 Millwood Drive, Millbrae, CA) on February 6 at 10 a.m. A private burial will follow.

Oh...what to say...Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Wally were two of the nicest, most sincere, welcoming people that ever walked this earth. I am so sorry to hear.

Phyllis was my pen pal since we were 12 years old. We wrote many letters thru our lives thru marriage, children and grandchildren. She will be missed! Joyce Slagle Strong

I'm wrapped in a lifetime's worth of warm memories of bar appetizer nights, square dancing, a handmade knit sweater in mint green, a giant safety pin keychain I carried many years until it tarnished and the logo fell off, your 25th Anniversary Celebration, cutting Christmas trees, and birthday and Christmas cards signed "mom". Thank you for sharing your precious family with me. Rest well sweet "other mom".
