David Segal Obituary

David Stuart Segal
January 20, 1932 - November 11, 2024
David Segal passed away peacefully in Sonoma at 92.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Washington Heights with his brother Alan, David grew up a proud New Yorker stickball in the streets, loving the Giants with stories about going to the Polo Grounds and sitting in Ottville for 25 cents, riding the A train, and Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts led to his love for all things outdoors and a deep passion for the west from his summer at Philmont which led him to the University of New Mexico for college. After two years serving as an officer in the Navy and a couple of stuntman gigs, he began a successful career in sales (or as a peddler as he described it).

David was lucky to have loved two amazing and strong women. He and his first wife, Maria, of 24 years raised three children: Michelle Greer (Scott), Laura Stovitz (Ken), and Glen Segal (Lauren). To his children, he was an inspiration and guiding light. He taught us to be kind, to give, live and love, to ski, to play cribbage and to care. He told us "Izzy, Moe and Max" stories every night before bed - silly and nonsensical - and Izzy, Moe and Max adventures continued to be told to his grandchildren. He taught us to protest and to fight for what is right from a family march on the National Mall against the Vietnam War in 1969 to a family march with his grandkids almost 50 years later in 2018 in the SF pussyhat march, David did not quit.

David loved his grandkids teaching them all kinds of valuable lessons like eating chocolate chips before every meal and that standing on one foot like a flamingo keeps you young. Grandpa Noodle shared his love of hiking with his grandkids at the bottom of the Grand Canyon for his 76th birthday.

David and Lucy, his second wife since 1990, had a wonderful marriage and life and was also fortunate to have Lucy's children Adele Lee (Rick), Sarah Ives (Jon), and Rob Ades (Anna) in his life. Lucy and David shared many adventures including multi month trips in Europe with their VW van Mabel, deep friendships in the Berkeley and Sonoma communities, and a love of food and wine. Even as his mind started to fail him, he never lost Lucy from his thoughts. She was his comfort, his rock and his true companion. The words "I Love Lucy" were never truer.

He loved travel, the mountains, hiking, skiing, wine, bridge, and the Giants. He loved the desert and dessert, especially cookies, ice cream and chocolate. David told bad and often inappropriate jokes shamelessly.

David will be missed so much for his kindness and generosity, his joy for living, and his love of family and friends.

The world needs more Davids.

We love you and miss you!
