Len Tillem Obituary

Len Tillem
June 9, 1944 - January 13, 2022
"Why are you calling a lawyer?"
Mention that phrase in the San Francisco Bay Area and you'll get a huge smile. That's the question that attorney Len Tillem would ask each of his guests on his daily radio program that ran for over a decade in the Bay Area.
A lawyer by training with a successful law practice in Sonoma, CA, Mr. Tillem was best known as a beloved voice of everyday reason on San Francisco's top-rated radio station, KGO. His combination of infectious good humor and friend-next-door advice made "The Len Tillem Show" a fixture in the lives of his listeners.
"I often (got) the question, 'Did you hire him because you wanted a lawyer?,'" said Mickey Luckoff, president and general manager of KGO radio. "No, of course not. We hired him because he's a personality, an entertainer."
"To this day, I still don't understand why the show is so popular," Mr. Tillem said during its run.
Leonard Tillem was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and grew up in Belle Harbor, N.Y. He attended Far Rockaway High School, Brooklyn College, and New York University Law School.
After several years of traveling the world, Mr. Tillem followed his sister, Susan, to California, where she was raising her three small children, Keva, Joya, and Lela. A central figure in their lives, he picked up the first of his most treasured monikers: "UL" for Uncle Lenny.
When he met his wife, Susan Fegan, she saw in him a unique family man who always put his loved ones first.
With the birth of their two daughters, Freya and Phoebe, Len picked up the moniker that filled him with even deeper meaning: "DL" or Daddy Lenny.
Over the decades to come, Susan Fegan and Lenny's dinner table was the hub for the entire Tillem family. New members and subsequent generations not only learned the value of family, but the importance of being able to tell a good joke and a great story.
Asked recently by an expectant father what the secret was to raising such a close family, Lenny beamed to him, "Show them abundance!"
Whether as "UL," "DL", husband or brother, when it came to family, there was nothing Lenny wouldn't do.
Through stories like the ones he loved to tell so much, his memory will soon take on a new moniker that Mr. Tillem was just getting used to: "GL." May it be a blessing.
Lenny is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan Fegan; his daughter Freya and her husband Jonathan; his daughter Phoebe and her fiancé Luke; his sister Susan Tillem; his niece Keva; his niece Joya and her husband Jon; his niece Lela and her husband Dave; and his brothers Jack and Herb Tillem.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the family will not be holding a service at this time.

Another memory we need to share about Len is how much care he showed us in our many visits to his office about my mother's safety and her well being in a situation he began to help us slowly and carefully unravel in a dangerous environment Len navigated with us providing us with wisdom like my Italian grandfather. We drive past your office always when in Sonoma and think of all of our great conversations with you and about our ALTIERI family predicament now we must manage with the sudden and tragic passing of my mother, Donna Marie Altieri, Len knowingly assisted us with the best tools we could ever legally wish for he provided using today. Thank you Len forever and we miss you. See you and my mother, grandparents and grandfather in heaven when God decides. Thank you .

Thank you Len for years of help and great advice for my mother and our ALTIERI family. You gave us so much wisdom of what could happen which today, it has with strangers. Thank you and hope you have some peace and rest you deserve. See you in heaven when I arrive with my ALTIERI family.

Len was a Mensch. I'll miss him. He taught me more about life, law practice, and basic common sense than any of my law professors. Kaddish. May his name and memory be a blessing always.

Just saw this sad news today. I met Lenny in Rockaway when we were both 14. We shared many childhood adventures together all through our high school years. Reconnected with Lenny and met Susan many years later. Lenny never lost his contagious, welcoming smile and joyful humility for helping others. RIP dear old friend.

I listened to Len on KGO for many years. When my father´s health declined and he needed to go into a skilled nursing facility, I encouraged my mother-a pre-Holocaust immigrant who escaped Europe with her family and went to New York City-to see Len to update her living trust. She wore her New York City skyline tee shirt to the appointment and they proceeded to talk business and entertain each other.

He was a one of a kind man... a mensch with a good ear for listening, a big heart for helping others, and a gifted mind for legal matters. His loss leaves a big void in our world.

May the love and support of family and friends comfort his family and May his memory be a blessing.

I just heard this sad news today. I was fortunate to have been a guest on Len´s KGO show several times, usually a annual cannabis law related show every April 20th. Through that I had the pleasure of meeting and socializing with several of his family and friends. Len was a real "slice-o-life" kind of guy. Great stories, wonderful sense of humor, fellow New Yawka, a real mensch! My deepest and sincerest condolences to his wife, Susan, and his family.

As my dad´s live in caregiver, he only wanted Len to be his lawyer on his will/living trust. I really appreciated how Len sent me out of the room for a few min to talk to my dad alone (to make sure his wishes were met & not mine). Len really perked up finding out my dad was a die hard KGO fan. Len showed us his KGO studio. When I asked him if it was difficult to work on Sundays, he said no, this was his hobby, just as other husbands play golf. My dad passed in 2011, so I hope he can see Len again. Both great men!

Len was great to listen to. I looked forward to his program with his entertaining and good advise. Every time I would pass his office on Broadway, I would look over and think of him and his show. Lately, I would think of him and hope all was well. So sad to hear of his passing. Blessings and God's comfort to all the family and friends.

Uncle Lenny was an incredible Patriarch to a family made up, almost entirely, of strong, dynamic women. I was fortunate enough to know him when I became dearest friends with his niece Lela 30 years ago... The Tillems excel at warmth, generosity, and gathering in celebrations of family and love. Len was the leader of the pack, always with a hug, a smile, a hilarious story, or valuable words of wisdom. I always admired the way he loved his family, and how he helped, protected, encouraged and cared for them in any way possible. I am so grateful to have known Uncle Lenny. People like him come along once in a lifetime, if you´re lucky.

I was a Sonoma County DA and had cases with Len. Not many, as he was a civil law attorney. I liked his feisty personality, and his advocacy for his client. His radio show, which I also enjoyed, was a public service for the community, especially older citizens. My condolences to his family.

Lenny and other friends, fellow travelers and law school chums have been zooming for about two years every two weeks. He was truly a unique individual, generous, outspoken and loving. I cant tell how much we loved our zooms and his strength and blunt but progressive view on life and family and concern for his country. Over 50 years of friendship and now he is gone but never forgotten. RIP brother Len. Best, Dan Alterman NYC
