Andrew Justin Obituary

Andrew Dillon Justin passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2017. Andrew was born on February 10, 1992 in Sault Ste. Marie.
Andrew leaves behind his parents Dyke and Lisa Justin, sister Kelsey J. Justin, all from Sault Ste. Marie, and his sister Whitney L. Justin and brother-in-law Brendan Loula, with nephew Felix Justin Loula from Madison WI. Andrew is also dearly missed by his Uncle Joseph Justin; cousins Abby and Noah Justin from California, his uncle and aunt Mark and Terry Thornley, cousins Alyssa Thornley and Jason Wrzesinski from the Seattle, WA area, his aunt and uncle Kendra and Paul Stinson, cousins Tyler and Joey, Graeme, Patrick and Cooper Stinson of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and grandparents William and Ruth Thornley from Lawrenceville, Georgia as well as many great-aunts and uncles, and second cousins.
Andrew was preceded in death by his grandparents Harry and Dona Justin.
The Carrie-Kimball neighborhood of Sault Ste. Marie became a special family as he was growing up.
Andrew grew up in Sault Ste. Marie until he graduated from Sault Area High School. While in high school, he worked at Karl's Cuisine. Karl and Paula Nelson took him under their wing and gave Andrew his first experiences in the culinary world. Though he began as a dishwasher, he soon progressed to prep work, and he came to have a real love of creating with food. After graduation, Andrew completed one year at Alma College and then transferred to Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, where he was enrolled in the Great Lakes Culinary Institute. Through GLCI, he became certified by the American Culinary Federation. While a student, Andrew received many awards and merit based scholarships.
While attending GLCI, Andrew was recommended for, and joined Traverse restaurant "The Soup Cup," where he rose to the rank of Sous Chef. While the restaurant is on summer hiatus, two additional restaurants are being planned in Traverse City and Andrew was tasked with the responsibility of following the construction process and planning the new kitchen design. Andrew would ultimately be responsible for the creation of the soups of each days' menu, assuring that the soups would be of consistent quality.
Andrew was a voracious reader, and would read everything from the classics to horror novels, Harry Potter, and Calvin and Hobbes. Andrew enjoyed kayaking, playing Frisbee golf and playing golf with his grandfather's golf clubs when he could. Andrew loved sharing his cooking knowledge and expertise with his family, and was always the first one up from the table to do the dishes.
Andrew especially enjoyed the company of his nephew Felix and when they were together you frequently found Felix up on Andrew's lap as they shared a deep bond. Andrew had a silly sense of humor as a young boy and a dry wit as he grew older. He is remembered for his generosity, as Andrew enjoyed giving and helping. Andrew loved those around him deeply.
A Celebration of Memories will be held on August 9, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Through Andrew's enjoyment of the waterfront in Sault Ste. Marie and his summer experiences at Presbytery Point Camp, memorial funds shall be directed toward additional benches along the riverfront and scholarship opportunities for students going to the camp.

I grew up with Andy in elementary school. He was kind, silly, and creative. Most of my memories of him involve laughter and soccer, we laughed together a lot and played soccer almost everyday. I remember one time I was kicked down by a kid on the other team, and Andy ran over to help me up. He then proceeded to get me an ice pack from the office and sit on the sidelines with me until the bell rang. I think we were in 4th grade. That was his heart: compassion and kindness. While it's been many, many years since Andy and I have crossed, I have thought of him and won't forget the friend he was to me as a child. People like him are hard to forget.

I have several photos with him, and I will send them once I make copies. My heart breaks for your family. Sending so much love your way during this unimaginable time.
