Beth O'Hara Obituary

Beth Ann O'Hara, the mother of actress and comedian Sarah Silverman, has died. She was 73.

Silverman announced on Facebook and other social media that her mother died Aug. 19. No cause of death was given.

“Wednesday morning my Mom died,” Silverman, 44, wrote in her post, which included a photograph of her late mother. “She was a know-it-all in overalls & two different colored socks. And defiantly, no bra. The woman who, when I was little, gave me detailed directions to a restaurant ladies room then secretly watched as I found my way to it on my own. The woman who went back to college at 42, and skinny dipped in ponds, and told me never to protect myself from a broken heart because it was so very worth the pain to get to experience love.”

New Hampshire Public Radio reported that O’Hara founded the New Thalian Players and, with them, directed 50 plays over a 25-year span.

"She was known simply as 'mom' to countless aspiring Granite State actors," according to NHPR's website.

At the 2003 New Hampshire Theater Awards, Silverman presented her mother with the lifetime achievement award.

“Loving, nurturing, caring, colorful — she used to wear two different socks, I’m sure she was aware of that — supportive, honest, strong and with endless creativity and energy,” Silverman said of her mother during the ceremony, according to the site. “She gives us the feeling that we fill her heart with love and I think it’s because we fill her heart with love. Mom… we feel the same. You feel our hearts, as well.”

Services for O’Hara were held Aug. 21 in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Though death can steal your loved one, it can never steal your love, it lives in your hearts, and it lives in your memories. May you hold fast those memories and they will help you to deal with this great loss. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Beth Ann was smart, talented, sweet, warm and pretty. I saw her last about 20 years ago when visiting Nana Rose. Our families were very close. (Aunt) Rose and my mother (Lee Cohen) were best friends. My love and thoughts to Sarah, her sisters and the extended family, Carol Cohen Cantagallo

It's been 14 years since I lost my mom, also in August; also at 75. Your mom's left a tattoo on your heart; she'll keep you close even though your conversations may now be one-sided. Speaking from experience. Give it time. Best thoughts to you.

Beth Ann was one of the first people I met at Notre Dame when I became the Director of Public Relations/Publications. I remember the new light board she got for the New Thalian Players and her advocacy for the arts at the college. "Student Gypsy" was my husband's first acting role. She touched so many lives as "Mom." Beth Ann remains a role model and cherished memory. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

When we were told that Notre Dame College would not be offering our majors anymore, my first thought was about losing my theatre family with the New Thalian Players! Beth Ann had a way of bringing out the best in you while making you crazy at the same time. That's quite a talent - she created our family and she and John became our parents. We lost touch when I moved but I thought of her often and still went to her productions. She was such a lovely person. To her family, I offer my prayers and most sincere condolences. The world is better for knowing her, but a little more grey for losing her.

My sympathies to the family of Beth Ann. I was at Notre Dame College when Beth Ann was there. She was certainly an artist. I always appreciated the work she did with the students and some of the outsiders who participated in the plays.
