Karen Shunk Obituary

Karen Kay Shunk of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away on Friday, March 18, 2017 at her home.
Karen was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan May 31, 1954 to Spencer and Verna (Ellis) Shunk.
She attended Sault Area High School where she was one of six students in her class to qualify for early graduation. After graduation, she attended Patricia Stevens Career College where she earned her diploma in Fashion Merchandising and later attended Waukesha Technical College where she received her Associates degree in Accounting.
Upon earning her degree, Karen worked for Pabst, and later moved back to her hometown where she worked at the Chippewa County Court House and finally settled down with the Sault Area Schools, enjoying a 26 year career there where she was able to work daily with her daughter Amber in the Special Education department.
Outside of work, Karen was a leader of the Thundering Hooves 4-H group, treasurer of the Chippewa County 4-H council and a member of Fundamental Baptist Church. Karen focused her life around her family where she was her grandchildren's biggest fan while they participated in swimming, dance, softball, basketball and their 4-H activities. Karen loved living on her farm where she raised cattle, horses, and chickens and enjoyed her gardens, especially sharing the food that she had grown with the people she loved most. Her home was always warm and welcoming to everyone.
Karen is survived by her two daughters: Amber (Calvin) Smith of Dafter, MI, and Megan Romano of Ada, MI; grandchildren: Audrey Smith, Augusta Smith, Adeline Smith and Rosalee Romano.
Karen is also survived by her siblings: Pennie Shunk-Dusseault of Munising, MI, Spencer (Sue) Shunk of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Brenda (Wayne) McGuire of Dafter, MI, Karl (Carol) Shunk of Marquette, MI, Stan (Sue) Shunk of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Grace (Sidney) Burton of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, along with her best friend Carol Miller of Houghton Lake, Michigan.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter: Cecelia Romano.
A funeral will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017 at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home that day from 1 p.m. until the time of the services. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery later this spring.

We are so saddened to learn of Karen's passing. I had the privilege of working with Karen several years ago. She was a positive energetic individual with many stories to share. She told me one time about making soap, I had many questions as to the process a few days later she arrived at office with a bar of soap. She smiled so brightly and said now Roger don't take this the wrong way but I have a bar of soap for you. We both thought it was funny. I remember when her grand daughters would stop by the office to see Grandma, Karen would light up like a Christmas tree so very proud of her beautiful grand children. Another story was we (Karen and I) were going to get her father his real estate license. Let Spence Sr. do the talking and selling, Karen would do the paper work, I would conduct the closing. Spence Sr. was an excellent salesman. We are sad we can not pay our respects in person as we are out of state. My condolences to the family of Karen.
