Nancy Slater Obituary

Nancy E. Slater, age 70 of Youngstown, NY died Sunday August 23, 2015 in the Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY after a lengthy illness.
 
Nancy was born May 28, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, the daughter of the late Stanley S. and M. Frances (Kelly) Slater. She was a graduate of Sault Ste. Marie High School, and attended Michigan Tech and the University of Colorado at Boulder. A resident of our community for the past 50 years, Nancy began working for Marine Midland Bank and then for Dr. Sass and Dr. Gormley in Niagara Falls, NY. She began a 37 year career with Dr. Claus Fichte, eventually Fichte, Endl, & Elmer Eye Care in Niagara Falls, NY. Nancy served as their Surgical Coordinator and head of patient education as well as traveling with Dr. Fichte to the Honduras as part of Surgical Eye Expeditions International. Her life's work impacted many thousands of patients over the years.
 
Nancy treasured her family, friends, her home and her gardens. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, skiing, hiking, white water rafting, and sailing. She was a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club, the Tatler, "YEREDO" and the "Birthday Club" which was a group of her very closest friends that met every month. Above all else her family was most important to her.
 
She is survived by her friend and companion, Les Kahl; a brother, Thomas S. (Debbi) Slater of Virginia Beach, VA; her sister, Ann (Wil) Ziegler of Youngstown, NY; a niece, Kelly (Mark) Ziegler Smith; two nephews, Todd (Cathy) Slater and Sean (Heidi) Slater; and several great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a great niece, Kristin Ziegler and a great nephew, Tommy Slater.
 
Nancy, surrounded by her family and friends, celebrated her life on her 70th birthday in May. There will be no services or visitation. To remember Nancy in a special way, those who wish may make a memorial gift to Surgical Eye Expeditions International (SEE International)
