Naomi Newell
Naomi Elaine "Doty" Newell, age 90, of DeTour Village, Michigan, died February 11, 2016 at Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan. She was born December 27, 1925 on Drummond Island, Michigan, to Earl Edgerton Bailey and Mabel Edith (McAdams) Bailey.
Doty grew up on Drummond Island and graduated from DeTour High School. She moved to Detroit for work during World War II and then married Charles Patrick "Pat" Newell on March 2, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio. They made their home in DeTour and raised five children, Susan, Patti, Steve, Anita, and Roger. They lived briefly in St. Claire and then in St. Ignace, Michigan, where Pat was working as an operating engineer on the Mackinac Bridge. While in St. Ignace, Doty was active in the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
Doty enjoyed being with people and belonged to many social groups. She enjoyed keeping up on Drummond Island news. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Raber AmVets Auxiliary, as well as the Girlfriend's Weight Watchers of DeTour.
Doty enjoyed playing cards, and was an avid reader. Her family was the joy of her life and she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Doty is survived by daughters, Susan Ann (Kenneth) Kelley of Tucson, Arizona, Patricia Elaine (Gary) Lehman of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Anita Edith Newell of Marquette, Michigan; son, Roger Earl Newell of DeTour Village; grandchildren, Lee (Jackie) Gregory, Tim (Barbara) Gregory, Michelle (Scott) Elrod, Gary Lehman Jr., Daniel (Kelly) Lehman, Peggy Lehman, Stevi Newell, and Brad Newell; and great grandchildren, Jeremy, Nicholas, Christian, and Seth Gregory, Matthew Elrod, and Aaron, Josh, and Abby Newell. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Edna Newell of Drummond Island.
Doty was preceded in death by her husband, Pat, just eleven days ago, on January 31, 2016, they were married nearly 70 years; son, Steven Thomas Newell; and five sisters, Katherine Lowe, Verna Haken, Hazel Schopp, Opal Bailey, and Norma Nippa.
Funeral services and burial in Maple Grove Cemetery will be in the spring.
On behalf of both Doty and Pat, their family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette and their staff. A special thanks to a caring and devoted person, Dr. Larry Skendzel, who had a special touch and helped us through this sad time. To Lake Superior Hospice of Marquette, we can't thank you enough for your counselling, guidance and devotion to our parents and to us. You made our journey nicer and more loving.
