Fern Zehrung Obituary

June 21, 1918 - Sept. 6, 2007
NILES - Fern Lucille (Snyder) Zehrung, 89, of Niles, passed away September 6, 2007, in Silverbrook Manor of Niles. Fern was born June 21, 1918, to the late Clyde and Dessie (Kauffman) Snyder in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School. On July 30, 1937, at a ceremony in Mishawaka, Indiana, Fern and Chester became husband and wife. The couple were married for 46 years when Chester passed away in 1983. Fern was a member of the Coulter's Chapel Church of God for many years and also the M.A.R.S.P (Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel). A homemaker most of her life, she enjoyed needlework, braiding rugs and spending time with her family. One of her greatest gifts to share was her ability to play the piano. She played for many local churches including Coulter's Chapel Church of God and Edwardsburg Church of God as well as various nursing homes. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a brother, Leonard Snyder, and a sister, Blanche Markle. Surviving Fern are her son, David (Julie) Zehrung of Niles, MI; her three daughters, Judith (William) McPhail of Elkhart, Sharon Evans of Niles and Nancy Ann Zehrung of Niles; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In keeping with Fern's wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Coulter Chapel Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Fern's memory to a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.brownfuneralhomeniles.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, Niles.

I remember Fern as a quiet sweet woman and the first Sunday School teacher that I remember in my childhood. She and her husband were faithful Christians and I remember having youth group parties on occasion at their home.
