John Taylor Obituary

Aug. 21, 1942 - April 17, 2012
MISHAWAKA - John Joseph Taylor, 69, passed away Tuesday, April 17, peacefully in his home. John was born on August 21st, 1942, in Mishawaka, to the late Mary Byers-Taylor and John Taylor. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley DeWolfe. On June 6, 1964, in Mishawaka, John married Janice Lee Meribela. John is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Janice. Also surviving are his sons, Timothy John (Kara) of LaGrange, KY, Mark Allen (Danielle) of Knoxville, TN, and Kevin Joseph (Sarah) of Syracuse, IN; and his most cherished and loved grandchildren, Jonathan Robert and Hannah Grace of LaGrange, KY, Maclaren Dalley and Macalister Allen of Knoxville, TN, and Titus Joseph, Maxwell Roger and Vivian Lou of Syracuse, IN. He also is survived by his brother, Michael of Elkhart, as well as several nieces and nephews. John was a multi-sport athlete at Mishawaka High School where he earned varsity letters in basketball and baseball. John graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1961. John became the family's first college graduate in 1967 after earning a degree from Bethel College. In 1970 he earned his MA in Education from Indiana University. John then went on to serve the community by teaching in the Mishawaka School system for 35 years. In that time, John influenced and mentored thousands of youths in the classroom and on the athletic field. John coached teams in football, track, baseball, basketball and softball through his long career. He served as the head basketball coach for Mishawaka girls teams and won two regional and many sectional titles. John was instrumental in beginning the Mishawaka High School softball team in the early 80s. John earned Metro Coach of the Year. John finished his career as Head Coach of the women's team at his alma mater Bethel in the early 90s. John loved spending time fishing, boating, and tinkering in the garage or yard. He had a passion for Notre Dame athletics, the Chicago Bears and his Chicago White Sox. John and his wife enjoyed the endless hours spent at their "Lakeside Dream" in Edwardsburg, MI. John was quick to strike up a conversation because he loved people and life. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and beautiful grandchildren. John will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband. John's impact as a father and grandfather cannot be measured, but the impact will be seen by those affected for years to come. Visitation will be on Friday, April 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. COACH TAYLOR WAS MY FAVORITE COACH OF ALL TIMES. HE HAD THE MOST IMPACT ON ME DURING MY SCHOOL YEARS, THAN ANY OTHER COACH OR TEACHER. I AM ALSO GLAD WE ALL WENT TO LUNCH WITH COACH A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. WE ALL HAD A GREAT TIME WITH HIM THAT DAY, AND I WAS GLAD I GOT TO TELL HIM HOW I FELT. I WILL CHERISH THAT MEMORY FOR EVER. WHAT A GREAT MAN!!!! HE WILL BE MISSED.

Dear Jan, Tim, Mark and Kevin. We were deeply sadden with the news that John unexpectedly passed away. John and the Taylor family have dominated our thoughts for the last 24 hours. We have laughed and cried remembering the good times we experienced together. The summer paint crew, rehabing the house on LWE. Corey lake camping, fishing, gong show and snipe hunting. What great memories. It was a blast teaching with John between classroom antics, hall monitoring, coaching stories and events, the faculty lounge, and the Social Studies office there wast never a dull moment. Our hearts go out to all of you. We will keep the Taylor family in our prayers during this sad and difficult time. Bill and Donna Niemann Zellwood FLA

I was also in Coach Taylor's first class at Beiger with Nancy Flood in the 60's. Coach Taylor was my football and track coach for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade and my basketball coach for 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade, as he was for most boys at Beiger. I spent every day after school during those years under Coach Taylor's supervision. He was a great sportsman and competitor and instilled in all of us the thrill of competition and the love of sport. Thank you for your dedication and hours of guidance. I have tried to pass on his same beliefs to my son. Thanks Coach.

I loved Coach Taylor. He was my teacher and coach at Beiger from 69'-70' and at MHS in 71'. He was always so much fun to be around, and was a great influence to those he touched. I am so happy that I got the opportunity a few years ago to tell him how much he meant to me. - Dave Overman (Avon, IN)

Taylor family - So sorry for your loss. I can't think of any teacher or coach who had a bigger impact on me than Coach Taylor. I'm lucky to have been coached by him and very glad to have had lunch with him a few years ago. Miss you Coach. Rest in peace.

Dear Taylor Family:
I had Coach Taylor as my homeroom sponsor at MHS in 1981. I was also a member of the first MHS softball team that same year. I have fond memories of the coach. He pushed us and worked us hard. All the hard work paid off for our team each of the yrs from 1981 and beyond due in part to his dedication to the program. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.

Coach Taylor was one of the coaches I had that could get the absolute best of a team. My memories are those of him chasing us around the court with a broom to diving on the floor and wrestling for loose basketballs. Coach Taylor was solely responsible for helping me to play beyond high school at the college level. He was a little guy, but cast a large shadow and will be missed. My families thoughts and prayers are with you.
