Joseph Hickey Obituary

Joseph E. Hickey May 15, 1928 - Feb. 3, 2015 NILES - Joseph E. "Joe" Hickey, born May 15, 1928, the baby of eight children of Kathryn B. and Thomas L. Hickey Sr., died February 3, 2015. Joe, as did all of his brothers and sisters, attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Central High School. Joe, and his five brothers attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating from the school of business in 1950. In 1951, he was drafted into the army and served two years during the Korean War. While in Yokohama, Japan, he formed the first N.D. Club of Japan in 1952. After his return from the army in 1953, on a trip to the N.D. vs Southern Cal football game pep rally, he met Mary McGann (whose parents were accompanying her on their final trip together before she was to enter a cloistered order of religious in Tarrytown, NY). They had their first "date" after the pep rally along with a cast of thousands. On June 12, 1954, Mary and Joe were married at Sacred Heart Church (now Basilica) at Notre Dame. They were blessed by four daughters: Mary (Joe) Woodka of South Bend, Katy (Mark) Bradford of Bloomington, IN, Anne (Dan) Brown of Winchester, VA, and Sue (John) Holmes of South Bend; three sons: Joseph Jr. (Kathy) South Bend, Albert (Ann Marie) Western Springs, IL, and preceded in death by Dan (Boomer) in March 2010. He began his career with The Hickey Construction Company (later The Hickey Company) in 1954. Over many years, they were included in numerous landmark structures in the mid-west. In 1980 he co-founded Erskine Manor Associates, Inc. Together with the Sisters of The Holy Cross on the site of the former estate of Albert Erskine (an early President and successor to the Studebaker Brothers company), they developed Erskine Manor on South Miami Street. Joe later developed Erskine Downs and the condominiums ~ also on the Erskine Estate. In 1988, he co-founded "The Pinnacles" to develop property on Lake Michigan at South Haven, MI. In 2005, Mary & Joe made their residence on the St. Joe River near Niles, Michigan. Joe is survived by his beloved wife Mary and their six children, 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; also survived by his sister, Patricia "Pat" Sarb of Dearborn, MI. He was preceded in death by siblings: Tom, Louis, Don, Kathleen, Jerry and John. He was a member of St. Matthew's Cathedral, South Bend, and a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous, recently celebrating 39.5 years of sobriety. The family wishes to thank, most sincerely, the numerous physicians and caregivers who have served Joe/Dad over the years. Your caring and concern have been very much appreciated. Visitation will be held from 2:00 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. There will be a brief wake service at the funeral home at 5:15 p.m. conducted by longtime friend, Fr. Charles "Charlie" Kohlerman, C.S.C. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew's Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, IN. Services to be concelebrated by dear friends Monsignor Michael Heintz, Pastor & Rector, St. Matthew's Cathedral, Monsignor William Schooler, Pastor & Rector of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, IN, and Rev. Dear Mary and family, I am saddened by your loss. Joe gave so much of himself so freely to so many. He gave me a second chance at life, which began in 1977 and continues to this day. I shall forever be grateful to have had him in my life.

Joe's passing marks the end of another great era in Notre Dame history. The loyalty and kindness Joe and Mary showed to so many of us "homeless" students while we were in South Bend was boundless. Do I want to sit in my dorm and eat dining hall food or go to the "Hickey pool party/Barbecue extravaganza". They sure made a lonely boy from Oregon feel a lot closer to home. You just were family from the moment you met them.

God bless Joe, Mary and all the wonderful Hickey clan. May the institution so integral to my experience at ND live on. Brian Doherty

Mary, I am so sorry. Remember al the good times and all of your years together

February 5, 2015

Mary,
What a wonderful man and friend Joe was. Husband, father, business executive and benefactor. His friendship was everlasting. I treasured it as did my brother when both of you reached out to him when he returned to South Bend. It was remarkable and so typical of you both. My prayers are with you and your family, children and grandchildren.
Sharing your loss,
Frank Schurz

Mary and Family, I am so thankful to all of you and have such great memories of Joe, for the friendship and kindness that you have given over the years. It is hard to believe that it has been 47 years since Joe sought my classmates and myself out and introduced us to a wonderful family and group of friends in South Bend. I know that I am one of many of his extended "family" and South Bend legacies, and I could not be more greatful. Joe was a friend to many, and appreciated greatly as a warm, opinionated, transparent and gracious person. God bless you all.

The first call I received from S. Bend when I was named athletic director at ND was from Joe - we were the same age and each had seven kids - and we became very close friends from that day forward. I will miss our weekly phone calls - and our visits on our annual trips to ND and S Bend!

February 5, 2015

Dear Mary and family. Nick and I can't express how much we appreciated his friendship, support, and guidance to us as a young couple, new to South Bend. We always knew we were welcome in your home, with open arms, no matter how much time had past between visits. Our prayer is that God will wrap all of you in his arms to give you peace, and strength during this difficult journey. All our lve. Blessings, Jean and Nick Eddy

Mary, family and the many friends of Joe, I am very sorry for your loss.
As a student at ND, I worked for Hickey Construction several summers and was honored to know Joe and Mary in those summers as vital, giving, and caring persons. Joe was always a presence in his convertible with his seersucker suits and dapper appearance, but I mostly remember his cool demeanor under pressure and his gregarious personality. May you all comfort each other in you love of Joe and rejoice in a life well lived.
