Mark Anders Obituary

Mark J. Anders

Dec. 4, 1970 - Oct. 9, 2016

EDWARDSBURG - Mark Joseph Anders, 45 years old, of Edwardsburg, died Oct. 9, 2016 at his parent's home in Dowagiac, after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 4, 1970 in Dowagiac, the son of Victor and Helen Anders, and has lived in this area most of his life.

Mark Anders' life was all about sports, mostly football. He played fervently, followed his teams faithfully, and coached his sons passionately. He attended Dowagiac Union High School, graduating in 1989. While playing under Coach Bernard Thomas, his team qualified for the MHSAA State Playoffs. His college football years include Triton College in Illinois and Ferris State University in Michigan. He graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Corporate Fitness and Wellness Recreation. He worked as an Exercise Therapist at Corrective Care in Mishawaka, IN. In 2007, he started his own business, The Customized Workout, and taught local exercise classes.

On May 19, 2001, Mark married Vicki Linnea Gould, daughter of Lydia and Jack Gould of Dowagiac. This year marked fifteen years of marriage. On April 10, 2004 they welcomed Steven Edward into their family. On May 4, 2007, they were pleased that Matthew John joined them. Other family members surviving, besides his wife, his two sons and his parents are Julie Zehrong of Panama City, Florida and Jim Anders of Dowagiac.

Mark was an active member of Hope United Methodist Church in Edwardsburg. The Anders couple volunteered at Vacation Bible School and Mark ran games for children at Crystal Springs Camp in Dowagiac. Mark served as Chairman of the Trustees, along with participating in Men's Bible Study classes. He also meticulously manicured the parsonage lawn for many years.

Mark, along with his family, put up a heroic fight against head and neck cancer since his first surgery in Sept. 2012. Mark went to be with the Lord after several months of Hospice Care at home and constant care from Vicki and Helen.

Family and friends may gather on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Road, Edwardsburg. The Service of Remembrance will be Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. All may also gather at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Monday. Officiating will be Mark's brother-in-law, Rev. Jeff Reese. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will follow the service on Monday at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, north of Niles on M-51. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Hope United Methodist Church, ‘Project Hope Fund', P.O. Box 624, Edwardsburg, MI 49112-0624.

First memory of Mark is when we bought their house in twin lakes back in the early eighties. Remember looking at his house and we went in the backyard to see their swimming pool. Mark wanted to show us he could swim underwater down and back twice. That a pretty big deal when your a fourth grader or even an adult. After that we continued to cross paths over the next decade, the main Reason was our love for sports. Mark Rest In Peace and hope all families can find some comfort in this difficult time. God Bless
