SOUTH BEND - Nathaniel S. Dowdell, 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2018 at his residence. He was born on October 19, 1945 in Birmingham, AL, to Stephanie Dowdell, Jr. and Mary Louise (Courtland) Dowdell, both of whom preceded him in death.
On August 18, 2001 in South Bend, IN, Nathaniel married the former Carol Plump, who survives. He is also survived by daughters, Stephanie Harris of Michigan City, IN, Tamika Cristler of South Bend, Jean (Kevin) Winborn of South Bend, Virginia Stewart of South Bend, Sarah (Christopher) Williams of Maricopa, AZ, Alezandra Ford, and Leatrus (Jerry) Gideon; sons, Terry Williams and Alex Ford; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Nathaniel is also survived by his sisters, Janett (Joe) Collins, Beverly (Ernest) Boards, Addie (Leanard) Thornton, Abby (Todd) Broughton, and Abigail (John) Dowdell; and his brothers, Tyrone (Valeria) Dowdell, Gonzales Dowdell, Alton Dowdell, Joseph Dowdell, Jake Dowdell, and Herbert Dowdell. In addition to his parents, Nathaniel was preceded in death by four brothers.
Nathaniel was ordained as Elder under Church of God in Christ. He then attended Bethel College and received his doctrine degree at Christian Center Church under the late Pastor Lester Sumrall. He served as the pastor of New Beginnings Gospel Tabernacle in South Bend for the past ten years. Nathaniel was employed as a school bus driver for the South Bend Community School Corporation. He also was employed as a truck driver for Mamo Transportation in Osceola, retiring in 2015.
Funeral services for Nathaniel will be at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 710 Napoleon Blvd., South Bend, IN. Bishop Christopher Williams will officiate, and the eulogy will be given by Pastor Aaron Gills. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. A repast following burial will be held at Greater Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 am-12:00 pm on Saturday at the church prior to the service. Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
