Paul Scherer Obituary

Paul H. Scherer

Oct. 12, 1933 - August 26, 2018

MISHAWAKA, IN - Paul Henry Scherer, 84, of Mishawaka died Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Sanctuary at St. Paul's Retirement Community with his family at his side. Mr. Scherer was born October 12, 1933 in Sedalia, MO to the late Alice C. (Soker) and Pastor Henry H. Scherer. In addition to his wife, survivors are his children, Maria L. Scherer Lutz (Joseph) of South Bend, Mark T. Scherer (Cynthia Carr) of Centennial, CO, and John M.H. Scherer (Carolyn) of West Chester, PA; six grandchildren, Nikole Oliver Scherer, Rebecca Carr, Julia Scherer, Daniel Scherer, Ian Scherer, and James Scherer; two sisters, Mary Clutz (Wendell) and Ruth Schanke; and his brother, James Scherer, all of Des Moines, IA.

Paul graduated from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska in 1955, where he was known as an outstanding scholar, track and basketball athlete, a championship debater, theatrical performer, and choir singer. Then he did graduate work in History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, earning a MS in l956 and a PhD in 1964. While on campus he met his future wife, Darlene I. Lienau, whom he married on January 25, 1959 in Mt. Horeb WI, who survives him. Paul taught History at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO from 1962-1964. Paul joined the faculty of Indiana University South Bend in 1964. He developed courses in Western Civilization, European History, American Diplomatic History, 20th Century World History, and the History of Film. Paul was instrumental in organizing the Faculty Senate at IUSB and became its first president. He served three terms as chair of the History Department. His research and writing centered on 19th Century European Diplomatic History, World War II, and film history. Paul wrote a biography of Lord John Russell, 19th century Prime Minister and statesman during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Busy as Paul was with his academic work, he was very much a hands-on father. When his wife was away from home with a full-time teaching job, he managed to come home to serve lunch each noon to his 3 school age children. The children played family night games and sports each weekend with their parents. The entire family enjoyed living in London and Paris, and traveling throughout Europe as Paul did his research. Paul was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, singing in the choir and participating in church Council and Bible Study groups. He was very active in local Democratic Party politics, assuming leadership positions in the 1968 McCarthy Presidential campaign and the l972 McGovern Presidential Campaign.

Upon retiring from IUSB in 1997, Paul enjoyed playing duplicate Bridge at the Bridge Center, where he achieved Silver Life Master status. He continued part-time teaching during his retirement, doing courses at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA, Forever Learning Institute in South Bend, Lake Michigan College, and the Semester-at-Sea program. Paul was an avid birdwatcher, with a life list of over 2,000 species. During retirement Paul and Darlene enjoyed bird watching trips to the Texas Gulf Coast, Panama, Japan, Costa Rica, Australia, and Brazil. They also enjoyed travel in Indonesia, China, Canada, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

You shall be known by your works. His works were a great family who he loved tremendously.

Paul Scherer was the History Department Chair who hired me in 1994. I will always be grateful that he gave me a chance. I enjoyed his dry humor while working with him in the Department. He contributed so much to IUSB, to the History Department, and to his students. It was great to read in the obituary of his work for peace and being a father and grandfather. I know he and Darlene were a team and I extend to her my condolences. Sending thoughts and prayers of comfort.
Peace,

So sorry to hear this news. What and interesting and well-rounded person. I had the honor of having him teach many of my courses as I majored in History (class of 1988). Great teacher and very, very well educated on numerous subjects. Great sense of humor, but very "dry".

Thank you Dr Scherer for your dedication to teaching and providing first class instruction at what was then a small local campus.

Hic erit dracones....

I was saddened to learn of Paul's passing. I only knew him in his last months, however I loved his wit, beautifully handsome smille, and his patience to wait his turn when needed. He would at times mention somthing from history that he suddenly remembered, as I am a history buff as well we did manage to have a few talks about our favorite places in Europe. He will be missed but is in a pain free home now. I know his family will have many memories to share. God Bless.

Way back in 1968, as department chair, Paul hired me into the IUSB History Department. I was all of twenty-seven years old and had a whole one year of teaching experience. Maybe he was desperate to fill the spot.
Once I started teaching at IUSB, I found the two of us were of the same mind on all the things that mattered most about the department and about the wider world. This didn't mean we had the same approach to everything. He adored large lecture classes, I did not. The two of us became co-editors of the British Biography Series, sponsored by the North American Conference on British Studies. He concentrated on detail. I looked at how the manuscript fit with the wider trends. As volunteering to be an unpaid editorship indicates, service, both to the campus and to the wider community, was one of Paul's strong points.
He fought hard for what he believed was right and when making his case, he could be quite eloquent in large groups and small. This strength made some people uneasy. They worried that if Paul stood in opposition to their ideas, they wouldn't have the skill to counter his arguments.
After a few years, I had planned to leave IUSB and move on to another university, hopefully on the west coast. Well, we all know the cliche about the best laid plans. Paul was one of the people who made my involuntary, extended stay more stimulating and challenging than I thought it would be. This note is a small and belated way of saying thanks.

When I am gone, release me, let me go I have so many things to see and do. You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears. But be thankful we had so many good years. My father always said funerals and mourning were for the living. He is at peace and no longer in pain.

I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry.

Thank you for posting the memorial for it allowed me to remember and celebrate all the things Paul accomplished in his life. It also highlighted the things he loved and was passionate about such as his family, learning, the Democratic Pary, bird watching, travel! Our hearts and prayers go out to you during this time of grieving. Love - The MacDonalds
