Sally Jean (Goss) McConnell

Aug. 15, 1939 - Aug. 25, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Sally Jean (Goss) McConnell, 77, of South Bend, Indiana was born on August 15, 1939 to Harry Eugene Goss and Jeanette Esther (Schwartz) Goss in Mishawaka, Indiana, both of whom proceeded her in death. On July 4, 1959 she married John Charles McConnell at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Bend, Indiana. They were married 51 years before John passed away on January 21, 2011.

Sally was also a former graduate from South Bend Central High School in 1957. Sally was employed by the South Bend Community School Corp. from 1970 until she retired as the Supervisor of the Curriculum Department in 1994.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kelly Jean (Jeff) Cowsert of South Bend, IN, Kathy Ann (Bryan) Landen of Bargersville, IN, and Karen Sue (James) Bond of Bella Vista, AR. She is survived by 5 grandchildren: Kate (Shawn) Murray of Greenwood, IN; Kenneth (Lucia) Landen of Scotland, Great Britain; James Bond of Russellville, AR; Rachel Bond of Bella Vista, AR; and Nicole Cowsert and fiance Shikyell Collins of South Bend, IN; and 1 great-grandson, Landen Burton of Greenwood, IN.

Sally is also survived by siblings: Ronald (Constance) Goss of Senaca, SC; Gloria (Robert) DeBuysser of South Bend, IN, and Kent (Nancy) Goss from Eaton, IN.

She is also survived by three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law: Charles Ham, Albert (called Lanny) Ham, Richard (Patricia) Ham, and Claire (Thomas) Wiggins all of Niles, MI.

Waiting in heaven are her parents, Harry and Jeanette (Schwartz) Goss, niece, Jennifer (Goss) Ritchie; and parents-in-law, Kenneth Haggerty McConnell, and Margaret and Eugene (White) Ham.

As she was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, her wish is to have donations made to the church: 51490 Laurel Road, South Bend, IN 46637, where we will be having a “Celebration of Life Service” on Tuesday, August 30th at 11:00 am. There will not be visitation prior to the service.

Sally's final wishes were to donate her body to science at the IU School of Medicine to help others have the opportunity to learn from her. Any additional information regarding this program may be directed to Paul Fox at 317-274-3677.

God bless Sally!!! I worked with her in the Curriculum Dept. in 1988-89 and called her "Old Gal Sal!" Sally was a perfectionist! She dressed perfectly, and her work was always the same! We had lots of fun that year! God bless Sal, and may she rest in peace.+

I am heartsick to hear of your mom's passing. I have had all of you in my prayers since I first heard about her illness. Your mom was a great friend to me. She and I spent many hours together and there will never be a nicer, friendlier or caring friend that Sally. I will always love her. I feel blessed to have had her as my friend.

Kelly Kathy Karen
So sorry to hear about your mom. She was a super lady. So many great memories. I am sure Sandy is waiting to greet her in heaven.

My heartfelt sympathy to all of Sally's family in your loss. Sally sat in the pew directly in front of me each Sunday and we always chatted prior to worship. I will miss that so much! My regrets that I will also miss her Celebration; as I've been in Ohio since August 5th caring for my sister Karen who fell and broke her ankle in three places. She cannot bear any weight on it for 8 weeks. She also has two dogs that need care. I'll be here through September or early October. I pray that the joyful memories you all have of Sally will sustain you at this difficult time. May God's Peace and Love be with you. Marilyn Cabana

My sincere sympathy to all of Sally's family. Sally sat directly in the pew in front of me every Sunday; and we always had an opportunity to chat and catch up on what was going on prior to worship. I'll miss that time we had. My regrets I will not being able to attend her Celebration as I've been in Ohio caring for my younger sister Karen who fell and broke her ankle in three places, bearing no weight on it for 8 weeks. Three down so we have some time to go. Two dogs to walk and care for also. I'll be here through September and probably a few weeks into October. May God's Peace be with you during this difficult time.
