March 12, 1954, - April 9, 2007
SOUTH BEND - Thomas X. Gibbo, 53, of Burlington, Vermont, and South Bend, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 9. He was born March 12, 1954, in Burlington, Vermont, to Mrs. Barbara and Mr. Royal "Bud" Gibbo, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Gibbo, to whom he was devoted and cherished. He is also survived by Tim Gibbo and his wife, Tina. Their three children are Tyler Gibbo Sessions and Nate Sessions (child Kai), Shawn Gibbo and Christopher Gibbo. He is also survived by another brother, Todd Gibbo, and his wife, Nikki, and by his sister, Mary Teresa Gibbo. He will be greatly missed by his stepdaughter, Anne Feicke, her husband, Jon, and their three children, Elizabeth, Emily and Benjamin, Thom's beloved grandchildren to whom he was also devoted. Thom had a master's degree in counseling from Indiana University in South Bend and had attended Marlboro College in Burlington, Vermont. His passion for helping and caring for others is reflected in the career he chose in counseling others. His employment began as a Prevention Counselor at the South Bend Community School Corporation. He was Director of Inpatient Services, Coordinator of Addictions Services and Outpatient Counselor at Madison Center in South Bend, Coordinator in Outpatient Services at Renaissance Center for Addictions Services in South Bend, a family counseling private practice in Mishawaka, and was a School Counselor at the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation in Mishawaka. He was licensed as a Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker, and Masters Addictions Counselor. He was also an Indiana Certified Addictions Counselor. He was a member of the National Association of Addictions Professionals, The Elkhart Area Addictions Providers Coalition, where he was co-chair, secretary and board member. He was the secretary of the Michiana Coalition on Alcohol and Other Drugs and was a board member of the Indiana Counselors Association on Alcohol and Other Drugs. He was the vice president and secretary of the Elkhart County American Cancer Society. His dedication to others called him to be a volunteer/trainer at the Youth Services Bureau in Elkhart County. He found fulfillment by volunteering at the Hope Rescue Mission in South Bend. After Thom came to South Bend, he met Suzanne, with whom he shared his love of music, the arts and travel. They both traveled to China, to which he had hoped to return some day. Their travels would often include visits to family in Vermont, Tennessee, Martha's Vineyard, Texas and Mexico. Thom and Suzanne also enjoyed visits to Niagara Falls and Canada, which included a favorite destination, Quebec. What made travel interesting for Thom was to meet and learn about the people. There will be a calling at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, followed by a service at 2 p.m. in the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Road, Granger, Indiana. Though I didn't have much time to know Tom, I found him to be one of the finest gentleman I have ever met. I will never forget him.

Suzanne, I you met in class at Ivy Tech, and cherished you as a friend. Thom admired your photography so much, complimenting each piece as if it were a special child. You two were so sweet together, greeting each other with warmth in your eyes, sharing so many moments after class. He encouraged you Suzanne, keep going, you have many friends to share your love of the arts.

Suzanne & Family,
I wanted to send my condolances on Thom's passing I am very sad to hear he is gone. I first met Thom at IUSB, I was about 25 and sent to IUSB for therapy thru Vocational Rehabilitation. I am 43 now and not a day goes by that I don't think about Thom and how he helped me thru some very difficult times. I stayed a patient of Thom's after he graduated from IUSB and opened his practice in Mishawaka for a couple of years, I have tried finding him over the years to see if he was still in practice as I wanted to get back into therapy and I couldn't find anyone who was as caring and helpful as Thom. I truly believe if I had not met Thom, I would not be as strong as I am today! I have survived alot in my life and it was his words of wisdom that stayed with me over the years! Thom was truly a savior for so many and his memory will live on for years to come in the many lives he touched. I have always thought of Thom as the father I wish I had and his family was blessed to have such a man in their lives. He will be truly missed. My heart and prayers are with his family, God bless you all!

There are not many people who have such a profoundly positive effect on others just by being who they are; Thom was one of these special people who touched the lives of so many. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and friends during this time of loss.

Hello, Mr. Gibbo was one of my counselors in middle school. I am from Japan, and I had hard time learning English. Also, I had hard time in school, and he helped me out a lot back then. I still have year books where Mr. Gibbo wrote precious comments that helped me out even through high school years. I saw him just fine last spring, at my choir concert, and he was fine, and it is still shocking about his passing. I will miss him very much and he was one of the important people who helped me out in the United States.

Mr. Gibbo was my school counselor almost 6 years ago and helped me through very difficult times of my own. He was kind, and caring-an amazing person-and I could not have made it through without him. My deepest sympathy is with his wife family, as are my thoughts and prayers.

I was an acquaintance of Thom's from around the community, and I was touched that he always remembered my name. He also had a lovely, quiet, thoughtful manner. My heart is very heavy to have heard news of his death. May his soul now be at rest.

Suzanne & Family,

Thom and I worked together at Discovery Middle School. He made such a difference with our students! His sense of humor, passion for service and helpful nature provided me with direction as a new teacher.

Thom really touched all of our lives. It was because of his passion for counseling that I also began pursuing my Masters in Counseling.

I pray for peace for all of you in dealing with the loss of a great man with a heart of gold.
