Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting at the University of California, Berkeley in 1970 and then turned to the study of architecture, receiving the Master of Architecture degree from Berkeley in 1975. universities throughout the world. In addition to receiving teaching awards at Notre Dame, in 2017 Smith received the Arthur Ross Award for his lifetime contributions in the field of education. Thomas undertook extensive research in classical architecture and early American furniture and architecture; his publications include the monographs Classical Architecture: Rule and Invention (1988) and Vitruvius on Architecture (2003) as well as numerous articles and book chapters. Local projects at Notre Dame include the addition to Bond Hall, the Cedar Grove Mausolea, and Carole Sander Hall. He served as a Board Member for the Society of Architectural Historians, the San Francisco Architectural Club, the Society for Catholic Liturgy and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. Thomas was a remarkable person. I pray for his family during their loss. His life meant so much and his legacy will live on. I believe that Vitruvious and him are having some interesting discussion in heaven. It was such an honor to work for Thomas. I will never forget him nor Vitruvious.
