“Vern” D. Peterson
Aug. 19, 1928 - Sept. 24, 2016
SOUTH BEND - Vernon “Vern” D. Peterson, 88, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in South Bend. A native of South Bend, Vern was born to Nellie and Albert Peterson on August 19, 1928. He was a graduate of Central High School in 1947 and attended Gloria Dei Lutheran Church as a youth through his adulthood. In 1959, Mr. Peterson began working for Burcliff Industries/Hose Assemblies, Inc. in Mishawaka. He was a loyal employee for 40 years, retiring in 1999. All through his life, Vern was a collector of many things including cameras, Studebaker memorabilia and, most predominately, antique fountain pens. He was well-known in local auction circuits.
Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife, Catherine Peterson; daughter, Cinda Bailey (Ron) of Elkhart, IN; stepson, Bruce Miller (Margaret) of Mishawaka, IN; son, Gary Peterson of Lake Station, IN; and stepdaughter, Dian Wordinger (Robert) of Osceola, IN; grandchildren, Andrew Cour (Tara) of LaPorte, IN, Shawn Kelly (Angie) of Conover, NC, Brian Kelly (Kathy) of Hickory, NC, Kevin Kelly (Tia) of Taylorsville, NC, Catherine Kelly of Chesapeake, VA, Hannah Krohne (Phillip) of Hartsford, MI, Lindsey Manzuk (John) of Middleton, WI, Adam Miller (Heather) of Indianapolis, IN, Amber Rohde (Joshua) of Mishawaka, and Angie Walters (Larry) of LaPorte, IN; and eight great-grandchildren.
Vern was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian Peterson; two sisters, Evelyn Madison and Doris Roberts; his stepson, Carl Miller Jr.; and stepdaughter, Cathy Kelly. A private Celebration of Life in honor of Vern will be held.

I worked for Vern at Hose Assemblies in the early 70's. He had a great sense of humor and always kidded me about my wacky views. We had a great relationship, and he was a joy to work for. I never forgot that after I moved on. I hope the family finds peace in the solid life he led.

I worked with Vern at Burcliff. He always had a smile even if things didnt go his way. A very gentle soul who would take time to say hi. Rest in heaven my friend

I worked with Vern for many years at Burcliff Industries/Viasystems for many years. In his quiet, gentle way Vern was the best person you could imagine. I remember having many talks with Vern about life in general, and he was very knowledgeable. He, once, gave my a book called "DAY To DAY THERAPY" and it really helped me through a tough time in my life. Rest in peace Vern. I know you have seen the face of God. May God be with the family and give you strength and hold you all at this time.
