Wilfrid Hamlin Obituary

May 18, 1918 - Aug. 4, 2009
Will attended high school in Northampton, and college at Antioch College, Ohio, and Black Mountain College, North Carolina, before graduating from Wayne State University in 1944. He received a Master's degree from the Putney Graduate School, a Ph.D. from the Union Graduate School in 1976, and also studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During the 1940s Will was a civilian publicist for the Army Air Force and an educational tester for the Johnson O'Connor Research Foundation. In 1948 Will joined the faculty of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. Will worked for Goddard in a variety of capacities for more than fifty years. He taught English and American literature, Education, Psychology, and Film. He directed plays, served as the College Editor, and was Dean of the pioneering Adult Degree Program. He was the co-author, with Margaret Skutch, of To Start a School. Will was passionate about Goddard, Black Mountain, and the progressive educational ideas of John Dewey. He delighted in the natural beauty of central Vermont and coastal Maine; in birds, music, modern literature, and in the works of many local writers and artists. In 2006 Will came to live in northern Indiana, and received wonderful and loving care from the staffs at the Waterford at Edison Lakes, Providence House, and Buchanan Meadows, where he died peacefully. Will was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Brett, whom he married in 1944 and who died in 1968, and by his brothers, Norman and Talbot. Survivors are his son Christopher, of South Bend, IN, and granddaughters, Elizabeth Hamlin of Milwaukee, WI, and Katherine and Angharad Hamlin of South Bend, and his former wife and long time friend and companion, Alice Blachly, of Calais, Vermont. A memorial service is planned for central Vermont. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Will Hamlin Scholarship Fund at Goddard College, Plainfield Vermont, 05667.

I just read the news that Goddard College is closing its doors forever, and it feels like a blow to the memory of Wil. He was my facilitator in the early 1990s when I was still an immature student trying to discover what the limits were to my chosen independence. Wil was graceful and patient in his guidance, and his intelligence intimidated me profoundly-so much so that I feared taking more studies with him would shatter the fragile self esteem I was tacking together. I shouldn´t have feared. Wil was a treasure. So was Goddard. May their memory live forever through all of us.

As my advisor through my Master's in Education program, Wil's unfailing support and enthusiasm powered me through a very challenging time in my life --- raising an infant alone while working 60 hours a week and participating in a graduate program. His enthusiasm was grounded in a great deal of knowledge, wisdom, and solid convictions, which made it worth even more. I have thought of him frequently since then, and I hope his family knows how much light he brought to others.

Will Hamlin was my academic advisor for many years at Goddard, and I took his classes each semester. Every Friday, I went to his office and we had long, passionate conversations about literature. Even after I graduated, I would still occasionally drive to Vermont and he would recognize me by my shadow through the door! He was a major influence on my thinking -- looking back on where my life went, I realized how much I was modeling myself after him and his spirit: that of humanism, curiosity, and serious engagement with culture.

Wil was an enormous influence on me, and I learned quite a lot of what I know about progressive education from serving with him on the small faculty subcommittees in which we talked about our work with students. He was an amazing man; a model for the kind of intellect that I wanted to be, and for the kind of omnivorous learning that I tried to nurture in students.
