William Cyrus "Cy" Reed III

William Reed Obituary

Oct. 16, 1955 - July 19, 2012 GREAT NECK, NY - William Cyrus Reed III ("Cy") suffered catastrophic injuries from an automobile accident that ended his life on earth July 19, 2012. He was born on October 16th in Bloomington (IN) to William C. Reed Jr. and Martha Heseman Reed Bollenbacher, and is also survived by his step-father, John C. Bollenbacher, and by Cy's wife, Carol King-Reed, and their son, William Christopher Reed. Cy graduated from Bloomington High School South in 1973, and the University of Notre Dame in 1977, where he studied abroad at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. Cy received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Political Science, with an area of focus in African Studies, from Indiana University in 1989. The first of his many trips to Africa was with Crossroads Africa, with whom he helped build a school in Ada, Ghana, in the mid-1970s. Cy was a Rotary Fellow in Cologne, Germany, in 1978, and spent the following summer in South Africa working in a gold mine. As a professor of Political Science, Cy was employed by Simpson College, Wabash College, the American University of Cairo, Egypt (AUC), and the American University of Bulgaria, where he was serving as Provost at the time of the accident. Cy began his international research as a Fulbright Scholar in Zimbabwe in 1983. He subsequently did research in South Africa, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria. He authored many articles and books related to African studies and international development. He was also interviewed frequently by representatives of the international media, as well as being asked to speak as a subject expert to numerous foreign ministries. Cy traveled the world as easily as his neighborhood. He traveled to visit family in Senegal and Rwanda, and accompanied a friend to interview journalists in Tunisia and Nigeria, hitchhiking across the Sahara to do so in 1979. From 2000-2002, Cy served as Director of International Trade for the State of Indiana, for which he traveled to China, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and the Middle East. Cy inspired his family and friends by his creativity and his sense of humor. He was always happy, and always made others happy to be with him. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. Cy was a teacher: at camp, as a father, and as a professor. He was fearless in the classroom, whether the classroom platform was the horseback riding program for campers at Camp Eberhart, or while a tenured Professor at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, where he served as the first Director of African Studies and developed the Refugee Studies Program at AUC, or the joy of self-reliance to Christopher at their cottage on Diamond Lake in Michigan, a lake he had been visiting since his childhood, and which he considered home. In Cy's eyes, no subject was too difficult and no student was incapable. Cy served on the Board of Directors at Camp Eberhart. He was also an active member of the Episcopal Church, both in the United States and abroad. During the 1990s, he served as the Head of the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church Vestry in Maadi, Cairo, Egypt. In addition to family mentioned above, Cy is survived by his sister, Paula Reed Lynch of Arlington, VA, her partner, Margaret Pollack; Cy's nephews, Jason Lynch and his wife, Becca Ruesch Lynch of Charlottesville, VA, Mike Lynch of Arlington, VA; his brother, the Rev. C. Davies Reed and his wife, Carol Rogers Reed of Indianapolis; his brother-in-law, Kester L. King and his wife, Judy King of South Bend, IN; and nephews, Kester R. King and his wife, Vanessa and family of South Bend, IN, Larry T. King and his wife, Angel and family of South Bend, IN; and David A. King and family of Independence, OR. Cy's aunts and uncles include Carol and Robert Shircliff of Jacksonville, FL, and John and Dottie Heseman of Indianapolis; and cousins, Joanne Trobaugh, Rick Darby, Lucy Tracy, Brad Heseman, Julia Finn, Karla Gorsky, Laura Howell and Betsy Sheffield, Paula Bollenbacher and Paulette Feltus. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Camp Eberhart, Three Rivers, Michigan, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mishawaka, IN, or to St. Francis-In-The-Fields Episcopal Church in Zionsville, IN. Both Cy and Carol became good friends when I worked with them at AUC. The academic community has lost an excellent scholar and those who knew him have lost a witty and humane friend. He will be sorely missed. RIP Cy.

I got to know Cy when we were graduate students at Indiana University. He is sorely missed as a bright mind and a great friend. The world is a lesser place without him.

This is a terrible loss. Cy was a true individual: active and thoughtful, a wonderful conversationalist, always engaged and engaging. I feel fortunate to have known him and sad that I cannot look forward to talking with him again.

Cy was a great friend and a true citizen of the world. With many fond memories of our days at Camp Eberhart on the shores of Corey Lake.

I taught riding with Cy at Camp Eberhart and a couple of years ago we connected on FB, for which I am so grateful. I loved his humor, his goodness and his uniqueness. After reading his obituary I smiled and thought "Cy really LIVED life." He was a good human being. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Words cannot express my feelings at this time. I do have such great sympathy for Carol and Christopher for their lives are forever changed. I will always cherish the great memories I had as a child playing on Longwood Drive and the Reed family always there when we needed them. God please take care of this family and let Cy fly high with the Angels above, always watching over his family, in the Lord's name we pray, Amen!

Carol and Christopher, we share you loss as Cy was extraordinary. We loved our visits with him in various settings, most recently Oxford in March. He spoke mainly of the two of you (and The Wire!). You were always in his heart and we felt his love for you both in his stories. Let us know how we can help in the weeks and months that follow. Much love, Maureen, Martin and Timothy

I am so sorry for your loss. Cy and me were roommates Junior year, and I was very glad to re-connect with him on Facebook in recent years. We shared some happy memories. I hope that your memories can sustain you now and for years to come.

One of the first unique things I learned about Cy was that he sewed his own bathrobe...I think he announced this at an Innsbruck get together in college. A wonderful man, who made me laugh, inspired me and touched my life. Christine Fahrenbach, ND'77

I fondly remember playing with Cy, Paula, and my sister, while Martha worked to finish a hand braided rug in the house on Maxwell Lane. Those were good years growing up in Bloomington.

Cy was such a wonderfully unique and eccentric person. He introduced me to the books of Nadine Gordimer, now a favorite of mine. I will remember his sarcasm, wit and lederhosen forever!

Our sincere condolences on your loss. We knew Cy from his days at Camp Eberhart both as a camper and a staff member. He was an outstanding individual who left his mark on a large number of campers.

On behalf of the Notre Dame Class of 1977, please accept our deepest sympathies on the loss of Cy. When I became Class Secretary two years ago, Cy wrote to congratulate me and said he had just accepted a Provost position in Bulgaria. He invited anyone from our Class to visit Bulgaria and stay with him, and I did put his courteous invitation in the Notre Dame Magazine. I was impressed by his hospitality though until now I had no idea of the width and depth of his extraordinary accomplishments in life. May God bless Cy's family with grace and strength during this difficult time. A candle will be lit at the Notre Dame Grotto this week in Cy's memory, and perpetual masses will be said by the Holy Cross priests at ND. Please notify me of a Memorial as I would be happy to publicize the details so that classmates might attend. Ginger McGowan Bishop, ND77 Class Secretary, email [email protected]

I am so saddened to hear this news. Cy was my roommate Freshman year at ND in Dillon Hall. I enjoyed his sense of humor and we pulled many stunts together as well as too each other. Cy and I snuck into the Bob Hope Christmas Special that was filmed on campus in December of 1973. He was so scared and apprehensive but we pulled it off and had a great time. A wonderful human being and reading his obituary I am not surprised at his accomplishments in life. We pulled some classic gags on each other and in Cy's case it is true "still waters run deep". While we lost touch over the years I am glad we were able to reconnect on Face Book. My condolences to the family, May God Bless Cy and you all. Please let me know when the memorial service will be held. I want to attend. Notify me at [email protected]. Taken much too young, what amazing memories the family must have. Cherish those and that will keep Cy alive in your hearts forever. I am so ad.
