Witold Monkiewicz Obituary
Aug. 28, 1920 - Feb. 14, 2014
CAMP SPRINGS, MD - Witold "Veet" Monkiewicz, aged 93, died peacefully in Waldorf, Maryland, on Valentine's Day, and is now reunited with his true love, his wife of 52 years, Mary Elouise (Long) Monkiewicz, who preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1996. They were married in Boise, ID, at St. John's Cathedral on June 7, 1943, and were blessed with a daughter, Patricia Ann, on Oct. 29, 1945. Veet was born on August 28, 1920, in Brockton, Massachusetts, to the late Vincent and Zofija (Harasimowicz) Monkiewicz. He had two sisters who preceded him in death, Philomena and Albina (known as Sister Hermeline, FSSJ), and they grew up across the street from their beloved parish, Our Lady of Ostrabrama (now known as St. Edith Stein). He graduated from Brockton High School in 1938 where he starred on the varsity basketball team. Veet enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in June 1941 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, having served his country faithfully all over the world. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Jackson College in Honolulu. He was an avid golfer who was able to shoot his age at 77. He had a natural curiosity of all new inventions and possessed a particular zeal for technology. Veet had a lifelong devotion to his Catholic faith, and his values were steadfast - God, country, family. Left behind to cherish his memory are many treasured friends and family: his daughter, Pati (Jack) Darby of Mishawaka, IN; his four grandchildren, Mike (Manon) McCann of Virginia Beach, VA, Carrie (Matt) Steenbeke of Granger, IN, Chris (Dave) Grossnickle and Kevin (Carrie) McCann of South Bend, IN; his six great-grandchildren, Dani (Ryan) McAfee, Katie, Joey and Billy Steenbeke, Amy and Bobby Grossnickle; and his great-great-grandchild, Gracie McAfee. Funeral arrangements will be held in Camp Springs, MD, and burial will take place in Brockton, MA.
