Janet Reardon Obituary

Stoughton Janet (Howard) Reardon, a longtime Stoughton resident, formerly of Boston and Halifax, passed away after a brief illness, Monday, May 26, 2008, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 64 years old. She was the beloved wife of over 38 years to John B. Reardon. They were married Oct. 12, 1969, in the First Congregational Church in Falmouth. Mrs. Reardon is also survived by her two loving daughters, Anne B. Reardon and Amy P. Reardon, both of Stoughton; and her brother, Robert C. Howard Jr. of Norfolk. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother Stephen Howard. Mrs. Reardon was born with Emphysema, Dec. 30, 1943, in Boston, and was a cherished daughter of the late Winthrop Avery and Evelyn (Phillips) Reid. She attended East Bridgewater Public Schools and Stonehill College, where she received her undergraduate degree in accounting and later her master's degree in taxation accounting from Bentley College. She was very proud to have passed the CPA exam on her very first attempt. Mrs. Reardon was employed as a CPA specializing in taxation accounting for most of her working career and had worked for various accounting firms including the Louis Horowitz CPA office in Braintree. She retired in 2004. In 1991, Janet was the No. 4 lung transplant recipient at Massachusetts General Hospital. Also, after two hip replacements and a kidney transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital, Janet always stated that "Massachusetts General Hospital kept me alive all these years", and often referred to herself as "The Bionic Woman." She loved to read, travel and spend time with her family on Cape Cod. She attended and was an active member of the First Parish Universalist Church in Stoughton. A memorial service to celebrate Janet's life will be held Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Universalist Church, 790 Washington St., Stoughton. The Rev. Jeffrey B. Symynkywicz, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, in Janet's memory, would be appreciated. Mom, I feel you and know that you are with me. It's only been 9 days, but I have seen you twice in my dreams...and I know you are here. Please continue to visit. We are all doing ok, but I've been quite down these past couple days, I know you wouldn't want me to be this way but I just can't shake it. I'm staying strong for Dad and Anne just like you would want me to be but it's not so easy. Show me the way. PS - I rescued a cat today in your honor...it's in our laundry room.

I was one of those who played hooky to take in the BSO open rehearsals with Janet and Millie.

Shortly after her hip surgery, we attended a play in Cambridge. The walk from the restaurant was quite long, but we walked the whole way although Millie wanted to take a cab!

Janet truly enjoyed life and savored each and every moment. I don't ever recall hearing her complain about anything except taxes.

We should all take a lesson from her and treasure our time with friends and family.

Amy..how lucky your Mom was to have a daughter as devoted as you. I will remember her when she came to Sinai to share her experiences as a transplant patient at Deb's lecture. She was a courageous woman that lived her life to the fullest despite all of the health challenges she faced. I have to believe there is a better place for those that suffered so bravely here on earth. You and your family are in my prayers. God Bless....

Janet, even though you were my Mom (Millie's) best friend, wherever we went (skipping work to see the BSO Open Rehearsals, the Esplanade, Tanglewood), I always felt that you were also my friend. I was and still am inspired by your courage and zest for life. As long as I can, I will always remember the humor that we shared - be it from identifying a musician who looked like "Meathead" in the BSO or the story of how you met my Mom and asked her for a whole semester's set of notes. Or the time that you, Ann and Millie went on the cruise to Nova Scotia and were, from a legal perspective, made to walk the plank & deserted on a remote loading dock by some big conglomerate firm.

There is a Talmudic teaching that states that King David had red hair. I've always felt that you had similar qualities to David - your steadfast determination to keep on going no matter what, never feeling sorry for yourself and accepting whatever challenges life dealt you, achieving your travel goals of seeing the world, and taking advantage of everything that life had to offer. Whenever I feel the wind rustle, I will always remember you. I feel very fortunate to have known you and may you rest in peace with God.
