Joseph Carlozzi Obituary

GORHAM, Maine Joseph J. Carlozzi, died Oct. 12, 2009. He was the eldest son of eight children born to Guiseppe and Antonetta Carlozzi of Braintree, Mass. His relationships with his brothers and sisters were the abiding relationships of his life. Their childhood adventures as poor children of immigrant Italians animated his memories into his later years. Joe was a proud working man and spent more than three decades of his life at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Mass., where he was lauded for his hard work and devotion to the men whom he supervised. A 2001 article in The Patriot Ledger in Quincy that chronicled the history of the venerable workplace featured an extensive interview with Joe, who was proudest of the occasion when he met Admiral Rickover there. He also spent 10 happy years working for the Braintree public school system under the supervision of his late cousin, Connie Carlozzi. Joe's favorite pastimes were golfing, gardening, taking long drives, socializing with family and friends and enjoying nature. Joe married Frances (Swartz) Carlozzi, known for her intelligence and compassion, when they were both young adults. They enjoyed 40 years of marriage before Fran passed in 1976, and they raised three children, Joseph F. Carlozzi of Gorham, Allan Carlozzi of Cape Fair, Mo., and Annette Carlozzi of Austin, Texas. Joe's devoted second wife of 21 years, the beautiful Mildred (MacCausland), predeceased him. He then enjoyed many happy years of companionship with sweet-tempered Marjorie Whiting, who lived in the same retirement park in Halifax, Mass. When he was 94, he moved to Gorham to be closer to family members. He was 96 at the time of his death and, though still spirited, was ready to go. Joe is survived by his five siblings and three in-laws; three children and their spouses; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, who wish him peace. The family would like to thank Joe's neighbors in Halifax and his excellent caregivers at The Inn at Village Square in Gorham for providing company and assistance in his last years. A memorial graveside service will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Randolph, Mass., Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements are by Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, Gorham.

Dear Annette, Allan and Joe,

Reading your father's beautifully-worded obituary brought back so many memories! My mom had mentioned how your dad wouldn't eat leftovers, so it indeed took an "intelligent and compassionate woman" like Fran to disguise them! My father always held your dad in such high regard. I particularly remember when he was in the nursing home during his last days telling me "They want to kill me! I have to call Joe Carlozzi - he'll get me out of here!"

The times we shared in Saratoga Springs and at your home in Braintree were special; I know our parents had a strong and wonderful friendship. I will remember them all fondly and hope the warm memories you have will help you celebrate your dad's life and his legacy. He certainly had a good run!

I can picture Joe and Chick getting in a few rounds of golf in that big course in the sky...

Warmly,
