Wayne Evans Obituary

Wayne Trevor Evans, of South Yarmouth, died peacefully in the presence of his family on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, after a long, wonderful life of friendship, family and service to his community. The son of the late Paul and Marion Evans, Wayne was born May 22, 1928 in Windham, N.H. He was a proud graduate of Pinkerton Academy where he was class president and captain of the football team. After two years in the US.. Navy, Wayne then graduated from Boston University in 1952. While at BU, he was captain of the wrestling team and a varsity football player. It was during his years at BU that he began his career in the YMCA and that remained his passion far beyond his retirement in 1992. Most importantly, college brought Wayne an opportunity to meet the love of his life, Elizabeth "Bette" Spadea; they were married in 1953 in Brockton. Their life long marriage serves as an inspiration to everyone who has known them. His mother Marion was one of the first women graduates of the University of New Hampshire and together with his father Paul, they instilled in their sons the values which guided Wayne throughout his life - honesty, integrity and a profound concern for others. Wayne's career at the YMCA brought him endless joy due to the many wonderful people who contributed to an organization that was founded in body, mind and spirit. His career began at the Dorchester YMCA in 1952 and was followed by leadership positions in Providence, R.I., and Malden; culminating in 1965 as the Executive Director of the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton. Wayne led the Old Colony YMCA for 26 years with an energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the community that was unique. He knew the names of every employee and virtually all members. His dedication to the YMCA was exceeded only by his service to the city of Brockton. Wayne was President of the Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow. His love of athletics never ended and for many years he volunteered in the baseball and basketball leagues in Easton. He fortunately witnessed his cherished Patriots win the Super Bowl earlier this month. Waynes amazing life will be forever celebrated by his grateful family who were so lucky to have many years of fun, excitement and loving support by one of the worlds best dads. Wayne was preceded in death by his six brothers; Paul, Robert, Arthur, Ronald, Howard and Lawrence. Wayne is survived by his wife Bette and their two children, Douglas (Elizabeth) of Milwaukee, Wis. (formerly of Houston, Texas), and Marian of South Yarmouth (formerly of Rhode Island); four grandchildren, Courtney Henke (Andrew) of Boston, Lindsay Black (Jeremy) of Marblehead, Aline Ricketson (Bradley) of Charlestown, and Bryan Evans (Kate) of Andover; and five great-grandchildren, Edward Brian Evans, Adeline Patricia (AP) Henke, Charles Douglas Black, Ford Matthew James Ricketson, and Grady Wayne Alden Evans. Waynes legacy will be forever remembered in the hopes and dreams of his family and friends. Calling hours will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rte. 28), West Bridgewater, on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m. Interment will follow at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, on Friday, March 1, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory will be gratefully accepted and put to the best use possible by the Old Colony YMCA, 320 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301. Dear Bette, Doug and Mimi, I am so very sad to hear the news of Wayne's passing. My sister Donna and I just happened to be reminiscing about you all and I googled you to see if you were still living on the Cape and came up with this sad news. I have such fond memories of when we all lived on Holland Street in Saugus. I'm sitting here thinking of the many many mornings of "Mr. Evans" driving us to school, my Mom driving her station wagon to pick up kids for your in home kindergarten, your apply pie (the best I ever had), my Mom's wonderful friendship with Bette and so so many other happy times. Don't know where these years went. When I drive through Saugus on occasion I think of happy, happy and simpler times. Wayne was such a wonderful man, with such an accomplished life. I can't imagine the loss you are all feeling. Keeping you all in my prayers. With love, Linda
