Albertina Fernandes

1921 - 2019

Albertina (Alves) Fernandes, of Plymouth, daughter of the late John and Mary Alves, was born on August 9, 1921 on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde. She died peacefully in her cherished home of 92 years, in Carver, Massachusetts on January 27, 2019 at the blessed age of 97. Educated in the Carver and Middleboro Schools, Albertina was a graduate of the Chicago School of Nursing and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at both Saint Lukes Hospital in Middleboro and Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. Aside from nursing, Albertina was well-known for various interests and skills that reveal the vitality of her long and full life. During World War II, she took on jobs traditionally reserved for men, such as welding at the Hingham Shipyard. In 1947, alongside her late brother, Arthur, she completed the construction of a cranberry bog started by their father. The bog is still run by her sons today, which speaks to her familys farming legacy. She was renowned for her cake decorating talents and was referred to by many, as "the cake lady," selling all occasion cakes from her home for years. Albertina loved to keep a meticulous yard with beautiful floral displays, and her hospitality was un-matched. Her kitchen will always be remembered as a safe haven where you could expect fabulous food, words of faith, wise counsel (consejo) and light-hearted relief. She was the devoted wife of the late Domingo, with whom she raised eight children: the late Marcia of Clovis, Calif.; Karen of Huntingdon, UK; Arnold of Kingston; Domingo and his wife Marie of Carver; John and his wife Cindy of Plymouth; Edward and his wife Peggy of Austin, Texas; Joseph and his wife Denise of Williamsburg, Va.; and Teresa and her husband Eustace of Bridgewater. She was cherished by generations of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many loving friends. Visiting hours will take place on Tuesday, February 5,, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Carver at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment in St. Josephs Cemetery, Plymouth, MA.
