Charles Angell Obituary

Charles F. Angell, professor emeritus at Bridgewater State University, died June 13, 2012, at home in the loving company of his family, after a ten-year battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Charles Francis Angell and Margaret Carlyle Angell of Kingston. Dr. Angell grew up in Plympton and Kingston and graduated from Silver Lake Regional High School, and received his BA from Colby College, and Ph.D from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1974. He spent his entire academic career at Bridgewater State College, now Bridgewater State University, beginning in 1969 as an assistant professor of English. His scholarly specialties were literature of the English Renaissance, rhetoric and composition, and modern fiction. Throughout his long career, he served many leadership roles, serving as the first president of the newly-formed MSCA chapter of the MTA, chairman of the English Department, and chair of numerous governance and search committees. His book reviews for The Bridgewater Review were eagerly anticipated by his many devoted readers for their clarity, erudition, and wit. Dr Angell is remembered for the breadth and recall of his reading. He loved the outdoors, especially coastal Maine and the Alligash. He delighted in hardy political debate at the campus, community, state, and national levels. He was an effective and readily available mentor to young faculty. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Leslie Ekberg Angell; and their son, Charles Franklin Angell; and his granddaughter, Hadley Estelle Angell of Damariscotta, ME; his brothers William Carlyle Angell of Andover, MA and Jonathan Danforth Angell and his wife, Ann, of Damariscotta, ME; his sisters Barbara Angell Balboni of Plymouth and Louise Angell Spate, of New Harbor, ME; nephews Philip Balboni, Thomas Angell, William Angell, Jr. and Jonathan Angell, and nieces Alida Balboni, Sarah Angell, Jessica Angell and Jessica Angell. A memorial service to which family, friends, colleagues and former students are invited will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 3 p.m. in the Dunn Conference Suite, East Campus, Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bridgewater State University Foundation, Office of Institutional Advancement, Boyden Hall, with a notation that funds be directed to the Charles F. Angell Memorial Scholarship. For online guest book and directions, please visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com. Prophett-Chapman Cole & Gleason 508-697-4332

To the Angell family---
I was a classmate of Charles all through high school at Silver Lake in Kingston. In fact, we were in the same homeroom for all those years. He was a wonderful friend. We lost touch after college, but I always read his reviews in the Bridgewater publications that I still receive as a graduate from there in 1964. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to Leslie and family at the loss of Charlie. He was my advisor when I first began classes at BSC and then became a colleague and friend during the years teaching here. I will miss the times when we read placement exams and he would pick out all the quirky misspellings of some particular word of the day. He was a courageous man with a good heart and BSU will not be the same without him.

In 1989 when I started my teaching career at Bridgewater State, Charlie was the Chair of the English Department. He hired me and was very supportive during my years of teaching. What I recall most vividly was the support and kindheartedness that he offered when doing his classroom visitations and evaluations. On one occasion, he stayed beyond the usual ten or so minutes and for a moment I wondered what I had done wrong, but I was confident that if I had “messed up,” Charlie would be constructive and kind and went on with my lesson. As it turned out, Charlie stayed because he liked the article on baseball that I was using from The New York Times Book Review. I am among the many adjunct professors who were blessed to have had him as a mentor and guide. My sympathy to Leslie and the Angell family.

My deepest sympathies to Leslie, Franklin, and the rest of the Angell family. Charlie was one of my most beloved professors and, in the last two years, colleagues. He was always willing to help me navigate being a student and then an instructor. I will miss his witty banter and political chats most.
